Vidcard question

I'm looking to get a vidcard since I've been getting progressively lower and lower fps (getting to be unplayable on some maps).  This Intel onboard shit's gotta go.

I'm looking to stay in the range of around $100.  MAYBE a little more if it's a sweet card for the price.  So the question is:  What's a good vidcard in that price area?  Something that will get me the 1800 and 2000 fps that most people say they get on timerefresh.

I opened up my box and see that I have a PCI express x16 slot available.  Is this the same as PCI-E 2.0, 3.0, etc or what?  I know this matters when I go to buy one.

Not really a tech head here but it looks like you're boned. Either you'll have to a find a video card that supports PCI-E 1.0 or you'd have to do some upgrading (motherboard, power supply). If all you play is Q2, it could be smart to buy such a card. If you want to do other stuff, you should just save up and buy some new parts. You could probably get all the parts you need under $500-600 and it would be okay stuff. My guess.

this is a an excellent link to optimize your pc for battlefield3. now it is known that Quake2 is a drop in bucket, when it comes to computing power. nonetheless this is an excellent guide for any fps gamer. or PC user. http://www.geforce.com/Optimize

not relevant honestly.... the biggest things that hit older games like quake2 are things that help newer games like bf3

multi threading in video card drivers being a good example, and it has in the past screwed with my fps in older games, particularly when im running sli but single cards do it as well

also, since i thought about it reading his earlier posts but havent posted it yet.... you are using onboard graphics, in a motherboard with pcie slots.... that is new enough that onboard will happily play quake2 at a stable 120hz lol

once had a 60$ motherboard, on board graphics, was my first with a pcie slot, and it could play quake4 no problem
