MS Intellimouse Scroll Button
« on: September 09, 2010, 02:34:28 PM »
I've used generic MS mice for a while. They're OK, fit my hand fine and are reasonably sturdy. But they have a low DPI (tracking) and low polling rates. So I saw a MS mouse on sale that has 1000 dpi. When I hooked it up to my new PC (Win 7) and started Quake 2 it immediately tracked better. "Fire" works fine as well as my weapon change on the other Mouse button. I have "jump" bound to Mouse3 (for many years) which is, of course, the middle scroll wheel. I just press it. With this mouse nothing happens. No jumps. I go into the mouse button menu and the default setting for that one is "middle click". I try at least 5 other assignments for the mouse wheel (enter, double-click, etc). Nothing works. There is even a "gaming" assignment where you can put in some kind of macro. Every other brand name of mouse I have bought over the years recognizes the middle button as "mouse3". I seem to recall this same issue in the past with a MS Intellimouse when it first came out.

I really like this mouse but it's useless if it can't invoke "jump". WIn7 downloaded the Intelli 8.0 software automatically when it sensed the new mouse. I un-instaled the software to force it into a generic mouse. Still no jump.

Piss...

Depressing the scrollwheel on my Logitech cordless mini optical mouse doesn't trigger any game event either (jump is bound to MOUSE2; which does work). You could also try setting m_directinput to "1" or "2".

I alerady have that direct input command. It's very odd why the Intellimouse is the only one that Quake 2 doesn't recognize as MOUSE3. Here's another oddity about it. I have my scroll button commands of "scroll up/scroll down" also bound to jump - in case they are accidently moved. Well with the Intelli when I scoll back, it jumps. There's a slight delay then it jumps. I'm not going to start using spacebar for jumping, after all these years. I can go out and get a decent LogiTech M518 or something - but I bought 3 of these things (12 bucks on sale) and everything else about it works fine.  Checked the internet too, but nothing of value appeared. There must be a way.

I use the slightly cheaper MS Wheelmouse Optical on most computers I have access to, and I never install the intellimouse software. I up the polling rate a bit using the software tweak that Ely posted a while back, to get a slightly better response from it, but beyond that it just works perfectly right out of the box.

Not sure why mouse3 wouldn't work on what's essentially a better version of the same mouse...

You could try turning the mouse detection off and on again by in_mouse 0 / 1

Check with the bindlist command to see a listing of all currently bound keys. Maybe you spot something strange in there...

Nicotine has never been addictive to me, whatsoever, no matter how many years I've smoked or how many I smoke a day.

Those are exactly the ones I have been using for the last 3 years or so. Like you, I overclock it to 500Mhz which helps the shoot time a bit, but not the tracking. It's still rubbery. But this one with 1000 DPI was locked to your aim. I did some research on the web (its called the MS Comfort Mouse 3000) and they are closing them out everywhere. I didn't realize it but the middle wheel is a multi-tilt wheel as well, for extra browsing functions. Apparently it doesn't always work - hence the close-out status. So the problem is unsolvable for that particular mouse. Quake 2 can't deal with it. But I can still use it with my laptop.

Acer - I did the in_mouse thing and nothing changed (other than killing the mouse).

Time to open the wallet again and buy a high DPI Logitech.
