Thoughts on a laptop?
« on: April 14, 2010, 10:48:18 PM »
I have been tryin to do some research honestly, but its kinda difficult to get a feel for how good a recertified/refurbished line is

I am most likely going to get the asus G60VX-RBBX05 recertified for 699$ (before shipping)

1. i think the 16 inch screen isnt too small, its basicly about a 15.6in screen, and where i would prefer a 17 inch screen, the only laptop with similar specs in the price range is actually only 60$ more, but runs vista, and has defects in the product line which makes me want to stay clear of them being recertified because it will only have a 90 day warranty on it
2. 2.1ghz C2D should be plenty for gaming on a laptop, its also over clockable with asus utilities which to my knowledge do not void the warranty :)
3. 4gb of ram is plenty for a laptop
4. gtx260m is the main reason i started looking at this laptop :) quite amazing performance for the price
5. chasis for the laptop is quite high quality for the price, featuring stuff like a backlit keyboard :)
6. hard drive is plenty big and fast for my needs
7. i think windows 7 will be the best choice for a higher end laptop right now :) cause its really either that or vista and vista sucks (and yes i will probably duel boot whatever with linux)

I do have one concern dealing with gaming though, most specificly dealing with quake seeing as how its probably the game i try to be most competitive in, how would switching back and forth between the laptops 16:9 resolution and my desktops 16:10 resolution effect my game?? now it really isnt that big of a difference, but when you are talking that i like to play on a specific sensitivity and a specific fov on every quake and do not like to change away from that so i can land flick shots and stuff consistantly... how bad would it really be? is there a work around to make 16:9 feel exactly like 16:10 if it becomes a problem?

Also i would like any ones opinions on the laptop itself :) think its reliable product? i am second guessing my decision because it is a recertified laptop and there isnt any reviews out there specificly on the recertified version

I play on a laptop (only computer I've got).

It has 1.7 GHz CPU (just fast enough to get the required 50-60 FPS at 920x760 that I need to play well).
It has no graphics processor (Intel 945 mobile doesn't count). Turn off dynamic lights (set gl_dynamic "0") or it will get 2-3 FPS.
It has a 15-inch display (1280x800 widescreen). The result is that I have to run in windowed mode or everything gets all skewed and blurry.
NONE of this affects my ability to play Quake II.

So I think that really any laptop made nowadays should be good.

i know the computer itself will run most games pretty good :) as far as playing games gos, my concern is that my desktop res has always been 16:10, where this laptops res is 16:9

Re: Thoughts on a laptop?

I don't think that any of the top laptop manufacturers are able to store the entire human brain onto a laptop. The iPone on the other hand, there's an app for that!
 :lolsign:

(but the app was turned down by the apple store so you have to buy a droid to use it  :P)

Custom width and height? How would I do that?

I use the following line in my config file:

Code: [Select]
set gl_mode "5"

A. cant build laptops as easily as you do desktops :)
and B. the laptop was 700$ for a 1000$ laptop and it performs better than some 1500$ laptops so im happy

I built my own laptop  :yessign:  true, it's a bit tougher than a desktop and I did have some help from a guy who knows alot about the topic...still was very nice to see my end product and compare it in price to a laptop with the same features that cost twice in the store what I did to build it.

In my opinion, desktops>laptops for gaming anyway..just my personal preference to like them better.

I have had an HP Pavillion 17" screen laptop for over 3 years now and it's been the most reliable I've ever owned. Good specs too although the graphics are on the motherboard. Future Shop sold thousands of these so there must be tons of used around. Just get Windows 7, because it will probably be loaded with Vista.

simple specs to go by atm for laptops (i prefer sony vaio for non-business laptops)... win7 pro, i5 or i7 cpu 2.20+ Ghz, 4GB+ ddr3 1066 or 1333, 300GB+ 7200rpm HD, and if you game get one with a dedicated memory gpu with 1gb+ memory. can get a system with specs like this $800 easy...

keep an eye on eCOST.com for laptops, good deals there.
