Gigabyte GT220 1GB

ok after getting back into quake2 after not playing for years i have decided seeing i have been  playing on a regular basis i want to buy a graphics card instead of playing in default opengl with intergrated graphics. was thinking of buying a Gigabyte GT220 1GB. what sort of performance inhacement can i expect from a card like this? last graphics card i used was a voodooII back in the olden days of q2 when i first started.

lol if you wanna drop money on a card, dont settle for anything less than a geforce 9800 gt, you can get em for like 70$

The 9800GT are getting quite old, there is still a palit Daytona 9800GT with 1GB memory for $150 we can get.

the 9800 gt is getting quite old, that is no lie, its a few years old... but in all honesty its still a very solid card

i run two 8800 gts cards, and i can play anything i want with just one... the thing is that games coming out right now are usually also coming out for xbox360 and ps3... and those consoles are quite crippled compared to pc's today

if you get a 9800 gt you wont be spending a whole lot of money, and you will still get really decent card thats just my suggestion since you dont seem to be aiming for top of the line, you may want to wait for other peoples advice as well

Without doing research beforehand, I will assume the GT220, even though it's a "newer" card (or possibly/likely an older car with a new, fancy name attached) is a good bit slower than a 9800GT.  Do a little research for some video card reviews/comparisons.  Check out anandtech.com, tomshardware.com, or any of the other better-known sites.  Don't spend money and end up not fixing your problem.

an FYI, Q2 OGL on your integrated card won't look any worse then Q2 OGL on the most expensive brand new card out there. 

Q2 is still OGL ~1.4.
