R1Q2 crashes in software video Mode
« on: October 13, 2009, 06:02:32 AM »
For the players that uses R1Q2 client an the software video Mode

I have seen 2 maps that will crash the R1Q2 client:
lostcoast.bsp
lavatube.bsp

These maps use a lot of the SKIP brush.

I guessing is some software video error.

 :help:

I've had plenty of maps crash standard quake 2 in software mode. The best example is probably cliff2 for action quake 2. If you go into the upper water and down the waterfall, there is some sort of glitch that will cause a hard crash. There are a few more that cause the same problem but that is the only one that I remember the name of.

R1ch has posted on more than one occasion that software video mode has a lot of bugs related to client crashes. I don't think he fixed anything in it since he never published a new DLL for that video mode and any fixes would have been in there. IIRC, he regards it as unfixable since it's mostly assembler directives intermixed with C in the C files and assembler files that need to be assembled as part of the project. Last I checked, he was using the Express Edition of the VC++ compiler and it doesn't support the assembler tools directly, but one can make it work if you are familiar with how it was done in the VC6 compiler.

R1ch's b7904 sources (the last one I looked at) don't have a ref_soft project so I don't think he has ever touched the ref_soft dll in any way.

It would not surprise me if there were custom brushes that can kill software mode.

If you're still using software mode, well, you really need to use openGL.

For r1q2 client support questions you should go to Rich's site and get it from the man himself.
