Animated HUD icons? Which Q2 client can do this?

I've been messing around a bit with some new HUD stuff, and I'm maybe gonna throw together a new pak. I was hoping I could create some animated GIF or PNG images to use for HUD icons, like an animated health icon, perhaps some animated rotating weapon icons.

I tried using an animated GIF for an i_health icon, but it wouldn't show up. I converted it to an animated PNG, and that would show up in game, but only the first frame, it wouldn't play the animation.

I'm still using the old R1Q2 + r1gl, 2008 version I think. So I guess R1Q2 isn't gonna be able to use animated images... unless I'm missing something?

Is there perhaps another client that anyone knows of that WILL utilize animated PNG and/or GIF images for things like this?

About month ago i coded a fork of q2pro (client/server/gamedll/custom mods) with an additional HUD (switchable to default/new), but looks like no one was interested, so, i just removed it from moddb  :bigshades:

From what I saw in the video, none of the icons are actually animated, so it appears as though this mod cannot do what I was asking for.

I don't want to change the hud layout. I want to use animated PNG and/or GIF images, pictures that move. Like this:

Yes, i got what you want.
This part need an additional clienstide clientside coding.
You can't just replace default hud with .aPNG or .GIF, because both of them are just "archives" with bunch of splitted images/frames.
Current Quake reads only first frame.
Maybe later i will add support for frame based format to q2pro.

Berserker Q2 default hud has these things, even a moving head to represent your model,  You can switch between 3d and regular hud.


Rolly, your features are really interesting. I fear I know the answer but, I will ask anyhow -is there any way to reduce the hud scale even more? I play at max 1024x768 resolution as I still use a 17 inch monitor and it's easier to see at lower resolutions (I actually prefer the softer 800x600).

It was implemented in early builds, but i removed it because downscaling images not work properly (texture pixelization bug)
The only thing i guess - is to reduce all image files size using any image editor (Photoshop/Paint.NET)
That should work.

As you can see in the video, load times are not quick. Years and years ago, I tried my best to use EGL (or one of the other suped-up clients with funky lighting effects) to play multiplayer here at Tastyspleen, and it was a pain in the ass. Load times were long, and on maps with lots of people firing rockets, the crazy amount of lighting effects drove the frame rate into the dirt and made it unplayable.

Currently, this old piece of crap I'm using has a passive cooled (no fan) Radeon HD 6450 1gig video card. I suspect it won't be powerful enough to draw a 10 man FFA match on DM using that client. I'll give it shot, maybe I can tweak all the lighting and reflection effects out of it to get it looking more like r1Q2.

I have used both  Berse's Windows and Ucyborg's Linux version of the 1.45 release with the same 6450HD Sapphire Flex Radeon on a Xeon w3550 with 8g of ram. It runs very well for me and you can tweak it quite a lot through the menu, and by removing stuff from the paks that come with the mod. The latest version is 1.46 I think, but I have not used it. Set net_compatibility to 1 in the bconfig.cfg (or whatever it is) to play online. If you put that variable in autoexec.cfg it does not seem to take.

*The lighting and shadows draw the most fps out, as you know. I usually disable all shadows and even on a gtx660, which is way beyond berserkerq2 maximum requirements, the lighting effects can make the play feel choppy even if your frames are still quite high so I usually tone those down as well.

This is really good. I just got a chance to really use your work online -it's like your own personal mod. So cool that you know definitively whether you fragged someone, and the other stats. Keeps telling me I'm excellent too :) I really like this. I may have to get a modern monitor or glasses now. Probably both.
