There are 3 models that represent the guns. g weaps, v weaps, and w weaps.


The g weaps are models that exist in the game world. So the hyperblaster pickup model is a g weap. These are located in:
pak0.pak/models/weapons/g_bfg
pak0.pak/models/weapons/g_blast
pak0.pak/models/weapons/g_chain
...
The skins are located in the same directory as the tris.md2

The v weaps are the models that you see in your player view. These are located in:
pak0.pak/models/weapons/v_bfg
pak0.pak/models/weapons/v_blast
pak0.pak/models/weapons/v_chain
...
These skins are also located in the same directory as the tris.md2

The w weaps are the view weapons that indicate what an opponent is using. These are specific to each model as their animation frames have to match the player model. They are located in:
players\male\w_bfg.md2
players\female\w_blaster.md2
players\cyborg\w_chaingun.md2
...
The w weaps all point to the same skin directory as the g weaps. If you want to override them, then you simply replace a g_weap skin and it will affect both. That's convenient! (or possibly frustrating)

Anyone know if this will cause a missed file check on the servers?

You were right. I wanted to know where all the weapon skins are located, so this helps me. I'm working on that simple skin mod where all the weapons in the game world are solid colors. My edit comes out near perfect when I use gl_mappic 5, but total crap when I set the function to 0. I wonder why, but it's alright since I play with gl_mappic's value that low.
