files i need/how to save them/to reinstall q2

title says it all. when i try to start q2 i get a pak error message staing pak0.pak is not a pak file! figured i would save what i need and reinstall. BUT, i dont know what to keep, well, i know i need config, auto config, and base 2, but i dont know HOW, will it be lost if i just drop what i want onto the desktop befor delete?

HURRY... i have already not played for a whole day

First, it seems strange that your pak0.pak got corrupted.  I'd recommend running a "chkdsk /F" on your hard drive.

Once chkdsk has verified your hard drive partition has no errors, the solution might be as simple as to just drag the pak0.pak from the Quake2 CD-ROM into your Quake2 folder on your hard drive, replacing the bad pak0.pak.

Otherwise, I'd suggest renaming the Quake2 folder on your hard drive to "Quake2.old" or whatever, and reinstall quake2...  Then you can copy over files you want from "Quake2.old" at your leisure.  (Usually, .cfg files, textures, sounds, env, players, etc.)

YE-HAWWW copying off the disk worked! not sure what happened there, the pak0 file was empty! suspicious, must be malwere???
