I have a feeling that with this much dough, we could have even made passive defensive measures work pretty well to safegaurd the US in the short term.

Contrary to the belief espoused by the current administration and defense dept, passive defenses work just fine as long as you have more resources to throw at them than your enemy has to overcome them, and those resources are coming in at a greater rate than your enemy's. (this translates to "don't fuck up your giant economy and you can outlast the siege and crush the energy starved enemy outside your gates, even if they're heavily entrenched")

If we'd put half of those billions into our economy and the other half into social welfare and homeland defense, we'd be safer than we are today and attacking us wouldn't be the cause celebre of the entire unbalanced middle east full of opportunist political parties wrestling for control.
We also wouldnt have to worry as much about homegrown terrorism, if our people weren't having a hard time just making ends meet.

I'd feel safer if these dollars that I'm throwing into my taxes were being used to actually create some stability and security instead of creating more propaganda materials for those foreign powers who would love to smear us and make us "the enemy" in order to brainwash their people into unquestioning subservience and a psuedo-religious fanatacism.
