Quake 2 Installation

Hey Guys!

I'm on a computer with a decent connection to the internet and I was just wondering where I could download the installation file for q2.  I couldn't find it in the downloads...?!  Maybe this question should be in the child section, but if anyone... I mean ANYONE reads this please please please respond - I haven't played q2 in like a year

Omg... It's THE CRAZED ?!?!!

There is no legal pre-packaged Q2 download that I know of, since although the code is open source the media assets (maps, textures, etc.) are still not free.

HOWEVER, you can effectively play the online version of Q2 for free, via the following procedure:

Install the Q2 demo:

  ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/q2-314-demo-x86.exe

Then install the Q2 3.20 Point Release over the demo:

  ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/q2-3.20-x86-full.exe

That should give you a Q2 that you can play online (the single player game will be missing.)

At that point, I would recommend downloading a modern client like r1q2, from:

  http://antiche.at

...That will give you improved performance, faster map downloads, etc.

I was bitching to Eyestrain how you didn't have those files hosted... unfairly it seems.  How hard would it be to host the demo and patch?  I am currently downloading the files and will join tonight!  I should be on more often now that its summer again... I've missed you!

Simple enough, of course, technically.

I've often considered putting a big link on the tastyspleen home page, "Play Quake II for free - here's how!!" ...But then, I've never been sure whether id Software actually meant for the demo to be turned into a playable game by the 3.20 point release upgrade.

. . . So I would end up feeling ambivalent about it.  I guess I could always try asking them if they mind.

I played with the demo only for quite some time. The Full version servers on the zone were all rocket arena and LOX, 2 mods I really dislike. So I unistalled and played the demo for quite some time before finally reinstalling the full version.

I have a big collection of maps and mods that work with the limited amount of textures and models in the demo.

Quadz, tastyspleen NEEDS to put Q2 at everyone's fingertips!!!  Hehe, IMHO.
