Video ghosting issues

Hi there I get these strange 'ghosting' issues when playing back video, from time to time.

Is it the way the video was encoded and thats just how it is when anyone plays it back ... or is it something else ?

If anyone else has/had this problem and knows of a way to fix it, id really appreciate it.  Here is a pic of what it looks like:

EDIT: Its not the video effect that was put on the demo, but that ugly blue box that covers part of the movie

If it only happens with one demo (or all demos from the same source) then I'd bet that it has something to do with the way that the author encoded that video from .dm2 to .avi.

I don't know that there's a way to do a straight conversion from a quake 2 demo into a common video format so I assume that they used some sort of screen capturing util to make the .avi while q2 was running the demo.. I could be wrong here though, since I vaguely remember someone mentioning a program that was made specifically for "converting" them.

I've never really seen anything like that, expect in some CS videos that were heavily editted and had transitions between the different parts of the demo.( but they were intentional smearing/coloring effects)


Do you ever get this effect when playing other types of .avi videos? or is it just with converted q2 demos?
can you post the video file that you took a screeny of? I'll check to see if it does the same to me.

This is actually a problem that occurs with many different videos i have (avi/mpg).  The screenshot I took that from is the "EDL_xvid_400p.avi" video that bullz made.

It does actually go away sometimes, and then my video will be fine, but its just a strange thing that can be quite annoying.
Here is another example of the problem, that better illustrates what is happening:

What it is doing is 'ghosting' a duplicate of the entire video. (you can see at the top of the pic, in blue)

hmm, looks like it's your comp, not the video.


are you using an LCD monitor or flatpanel of some sort?
what is your refresh rate set to?

I am using a :

Viewsonic A70f (perfect flat) CRT
1024x768 @ 87 hertz (supposed to be the optimal setting)
most recent drivers

Geforce 4 Ti4600
most recent drivers

Now that ive been messing around with this all day long, I have noticed that if I access the drop down menu at the top of the player, and get a sub menu to drop down below the video, the problem seems to go away, and it is ok after that.  What a strange issue :/

well that is really odd...
your Hardware shouldn't be a problem at all.

Maybe it's the player.

Does it occur when you use windows media player or divx or some other video viewer?

Indeed, the same problem occurs in wmp, divx, and anything else ive thrown at it.  I think this one may go unsolved !! But thanks for giving me your input

herm. so its not software. that kinda leaves us with nothing to blame it on, but fate...

how old is that geforce 4 ti card that you're using?
if it's super ancient, (I'd assume it is cause my geforce 4 mx440 is older than god) the memory on it could be screwed up and producing artifacts, although those don't look like any vid card artifact that I've ever seen..

I'm almost stumped

Well, its not terribly old - i got it when it first came out ... so maybe 4 yrs?

But i have 0 problems anywhere else.  I have never had a problem running any game.  Just when I view video on wmp, divx, vls or the like.

is it worth putting in a linux cd to see if it works with a new OS and software?

I've been using GOM player for about a year now. Seems to play just about anything. Once in a blue moon I'll use Media Player for odd webcam avi formats. Its free.
