i need advice from computer dudes

ok dudes, heres the situation.......about 2 or 3 months ago i come back to the apartment after spending the weekend at home to find that my connection is not working....i go ask my roommate about this and he said and i quote "oh yo ok bro, heres the deal, i needed to secure our wireless connection because people were using it and slowin it down....so all i need to do is get your mac address and type it on my computer and you'll have access".....i was like "for real b? that sounds hot, HOOK IT UP!".....well, my troubles started from that point on....because ever since then i would get bouts of tremendous lag (ping 400-500) and my netgraph looked like huge mountains......but the strange thing is this-> the times that this lag would occur was curious to say the least......for instance, at this very moment i went to play on TS but couldnt b/c of the crazy insane lag....i know he is in his room but im not sure what he is doing to create such lag....but one thing im for sure of is if i step out of the apartment and then come back say within 30 minutes the lag is gone, completely and its sure enough to come back.....i tried to set up an experiment where i left my apartment with q2 running with the netgraph showing the lag and recorded the game so that when i got back to the apartment i could somehow spot the exact point when the lag stopped and figure out if the lag corresponded to me being in the apartment.....but when you record a game it doesnt include the netgraph....


is he just downloading torrents? or is he capable of creating lag on our network to discourage me from playing??(b/c he knows and proly can hear me plahying a lot)

any computer nerds out there know what i can do to figure out 1. what is causing the lag 2. is he fucking with me 3. how i can record the netgraph

Tell him the problem with your connection.

If he has a wireless router you should be able to access it.

What brand of router is it?

Torrents on your roomies pc will cause lag and pl. Although, it's mostly the uploading part (Seeding).
I can always tell when my brother is downloading (or uploading) something on his pc while I'm playing quake. If its just a regular file download, I'll let it go since it will be done pretty quick. If its the torrent that is causing me problems, I usually tell him to limit the upload to 15kB.
 
It's (almost?) impossible to tell if hes downloading to piss you off or just downloading.

Maybe you can try playing with headphones for a while.

If it becomes a problem, consider this: Who pays for the internet access?

yes i should tell him...but then i wouldnt ever know if he was doing it (dling or whatevers causing the lag) on purpose.....for instance, i just checked TS server and it had the same lag as before but i want to check and see if it was a continous lag or if he just cut it on......all i want.......

is a way to record the netgraph for long periods of idle time....
