How to use Xfire with your favorite quake 2 client

Xfire has the following sequence of quake 2 clients:
First it checks for r1q2.exe, then nocheat.exe and then quake2.exe

To use another quake 2 client you have to do the following steps :

First you have to be sure that quake 2 is in the installed games list of Xfire:
(Extra -> options -> tab games, search for the quake 2 settings (icon) and set the right game directory. Then make sure the
radiobutton "game installed" is checked)

Then follow the following steps:

1) Search for "xfire_games.ini" in your xfire directory

2) Open "xfire_games.ini" with a text editor (For example notepad)
 
3) Search for the following part in "xfire_games.ini"

Change "LauncherExe=r1q2.exe" (without the quotes) into your favorite quake 2 client. (For "example LauncherExe=aq2.exe"
(without the quotes) (Aprq2) )


I have changed it to Aprq2 and it works fine for me.

I used this exact method for a while, and the only problem with it is that the xfire_games.ini reverts with every update (which is fairly often these days).

An underhanded way to make this permanent is to rename your preferred client r1q2.exe, and rename the actual r1q2 something like r1q2real.exe. That way you're just tricking xfire, and you don't have to touch it after that.
