i finally got Q1 going after some serious googling. wow, i forgot how much fun that game is! 

only thing sucks, can't figure out how to enable "free look" for the mouse. one forum mentioned adding "+mlook" to the autoexec.cfg in quake\id1   but it didn't work. any ideas?

anyway, i took several screenshots and zipped em up for anyone who'd like to take a trip down Q1 memory lane! enjoy!

Actually, I belive Q1 still has an active community and servers as well.

I remember q1 having a command that forced centerview if you took more than 2 steps,
that might have to be turned off too...  just a thought.

Actually, I belive Q1 still has an active community and servers as well.

I don't play it though.  I don't know whether its Q1s netcode or my connection, but almost every server I try, I experience a "delay" in movement.  If I hit the jump buttong, a split second passes, then my player jumps.  Actually, IIRC, essentrix was the only place I could get acceptible performance.

Also, although I don't see it listed anymore, the Widow Maker server was probably THE most active Q1 server (about like Tastyspleen for Q2).

Oh, and on the mouse, I just took a peek at my config.cfg file, and under the // variables section, I have a command that says: 

freelook "1"

Give that a try.

Hey thanks Firebird, that worked gr8! i had to put that in the autoexec.cfg i created though, wouldnt work in the config.cfg.  anyway, it's rockin now!   

and thanks for the links everyone, big help!  i actually played with some folks earlier.
it's good to know Q1 is still alive and well in the multiplayer community.

i haven't played it in yrs.. so i was trying to tackle that sigsev error all night, then it dawned on me i had used glquake before to get it goin. doh!
