Okay, so I have dropped in the railz server from time to time, and absolutely LOVE IT when I get the chance. Damn, I actually think I am getting better! I usually score around 20 by the time the frag limit is hit (hey, thats not bad for me, when I started I was lucky to get even single digit frags!)

To the point of my post; Last few times I have dropped by, I received a message when entering the server to "Upgrade to anticheat".

What the hell does that mean?

I checked my client, and I don't see any updates available for it. I don't remember the exact name of the client, but its aq2.exe (NOT ActionQuake)....Aprime or something like that. I love this client, and would actually hate to have to change.

Upgrading to an anticheat-capable client is encouraged, but not mandatory (except for certain IPs.)

However, you're in luck. There's an anticheat-capable version of aprq2, available at:

http://antiche.at/

(You'll also want to download the anticheat.dll)

Even after all this time, I still feel like such a noob. Its okay, I'll just vent my noobish frustrations out with some frags tonight!

Been playing Quake II for 7 years. Have never used an anticheat, and never will. I don't like add-ons that change the game in any way, positive or not. I'm sure the admins love people who think like that.

In that case I think we should verify that you are using the original 3.05 release of Q2, where you couldn't see what weapons anyone was carrying, and the physics didn't facilitate any of the awesome jumps we take for granted today. These add-ons definitely changed the game.

It sounds like you came to Q2 to late to remember when the gameplay changed with every other point release. (People even wrote programs to allow you to easily select from a menu of different Q2 versions to run: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Games/Gaming_Utilities/Qselect.html )

There was a reason for 3.10, 3.13, 3.14, 3.15, 3.17, 3.19, 3.20, and at 3.21, id blessed the community with the ability to continue bug fixes and refinements from there, rather than letting the game stagnate.

A solid reason to upgrade to the r1q2 client, for example, is not just faster map downloads or more efficient network bandwidth utilization, but that it fixes several security holes in the client, including a remote code execution exploit, e.g. a "FORMAT C:\" level security hole.

That said, we respect people's preferences who want to run version 3.20. But historically speaking, 3.20 was never "the game". It was merely one in a long and continuing line of "add ons".

Hey I found some more change logs.

The 3.13_Changes.txt actually includes history back to 3.10...

aren't all mods created by a "developer"?

I guess the mod-fairy must have fluttered by one day and left us with WOD,LOX,DDay,AQ2,RA2,Lazarus etc..

But do you see those nifty WOD weapons in the actual Quake II game itself? WOD is a stand-alone mod. Must I break everything down piece by piece?
