weird colored lines/spots spamming on screen !@?$!

My PC has been running pretty smoothly and fine until today. I started up my computer this afternoon and started watching a video when weird colored spots and lines starts spamming across my screen randomly. I then restarted my computer and i thought that was the end of it so I loaded up one of my games (quake4) and started playing when i notice it happening in my game too. and then I got a blue screen saying an error has occured in Ntfs.sys

I rolled back my graphics card driver to the previous version but I still get the problem when I watch videos or play games. Is my graphics card dying? anyone hear of a problem like this?

hmm. weird.
Every time one of my vid cards has died, it had major visual errors
with a variety of colors all over the place, and usually in large blocks/bars...
Yours seems to be working ok (cause your display is still semi-readable) except for the little white
blobs... Although if you look real close, they aren't all white, and there are some vertical "stripes".

Could be a memory issue (bad vid RAM) or
You might have a corrupted version of the NTFS.sys file
(which would make all of your memory intermittently useless to you).

If you want to make sure it's not a software problem, try using the system restore utility.
Make a restore point for today and label it as such, then restore your system back to
an earlier point and see if the problem continues.
If it does continue to occur, either you didn't restore it to before the file
was corrupted (try going farther back) or it's another problem entirely (vid card memory taking a shit).

If this doesn't fix anything, just restore back to the save point you made for today and
let us know so we can try and think of other stuff.

If it's a corrupted system file,
you could also use your XP startup CD (if you got one with your comp) to run a repair on your windows XP OS...

It looks like the video card is going bad, to me.

I had one that alternated between looking like your screenshot, and a bit more colorful like the one below.

(I used to be able to "fix" it sometimes by running a 3D test program to make the card work hard and heat up, and by stopping its fan, until the patterns on the screen changed, changed, changed..... and at one point it would 'glitch' and then the noise would disappear... then I could play q2 for an hour or two, before it would fuxxor again.    That was an old voodoo2-sli card.)

i tried lots of things, including openin up my case and cleaning a lil dust out and switching my 2 ram cards from slot 3 and 4 to slot 1 and 2.. i also just got a usb keyboard which when hooked up windows tries to install 4 drivers for it.. so i put my old keyboard back and uninstalled the drivers for the usb keyboard.. so far it's fine and no signs of weird color lines/spots, so hopefully i fixed whatever problem it was.. before i go to bed im gonna run memtest over night to see if my memory went bad since i bought it. im crossing my fingers it wont fuck up before the lan im going to at the end of this month.

may also want to consider that it might also be overheating?

my older card used to do something like this when it got really hot (when the fan wasent spinning LOL)

It could be anything although it looks like a vidcard going bad, which of course sucks major ass:/ Maybe someone is willing to let you test your card in their computer? That will most likely tell you whether or not it's related to the vidcard.

Have you tested with a different monitor? (I doubt it's the monitor but you never know).
Did you check plugs and cables? Duh;)
What type of card is it and did you overclock?

My 6800GT started doing the same thing in Feb. 
Its been RMA'ed 5 times, every time the same thing happens... I get exactly what you have, two seconds before the card dies. 
I think my card had a memory problem, because it ran cool for a 6800.


It might be a memory problem. I would have thought an overheating card would just give you a BSOD. Good luck on getting it fixed.

Hopefully its still under warranty.

well like i said i tried lots of things.. everything i can think of.. and since then, it hasn't been doing it anymore.. so i really dont know what the problem is, couldve been lots of things. but so far its fixed, hopefully itll stay that way for at least a month
