OK, I'm thinking of buying an AK-47.

There's one at a local gun shop that I have my eye on. It's one of the models with a wood stock, made by Century arms i believe. The price seems right ($350) but it's about a hundred bucks less than all the other ones they have (all the other ones are folding stock models).

Can anyone tell my what to look for and what to avoid when buying an AK?

and does anyone know why the folding stock ones are all more expensive than the wooden stock ones?

Well...

No doubt Reflex has me beat in the long gun department. I lost several of mine before getting a safe.  >:(

Don't know much about AK's but if you put a muzzle brake on it, be prepared to have your ears and head pounded with every shot. I can't wear enough ear protection firing a braked gun. Instead of full auto,  I'd probably prefer the 3 round burst. More controllable and less waste of ammo. Not sure if the AK's have that feature or not. I've had the cheaper "kit" AR's. Never was satisfied with any of'm. My colt AR is a keeper.

I lost 2 pistols because of no safe...  I was damned lucky I had most over in my friends safe,  as it was they didnt look behind my door to see my mossberg and my 22.  I miss that Taurus 38 so much :(  Dumb kids that took em prolly think the Highpoint was "so much cooler"

I go shooting all the time,  and never had a problem with hearing protection,  well,  sometmies with poorly made plugs,  but I went out and bought a nice pair of shotgunner earmuffs :)

I never noticed a diff between braked or not,  I had a brake, and my friends AK didnt.  Sound wise anyhow,  mine sure had ALOT less recoil.
Also noticed no sound difference between ARs with ot without a brake.

A Nagant or an 8mm or even 30.06, unbraked, beats the pants off of any AK or AR in loudness.

Im none to keen on AR's,  something about the sights.  I know they are spose to be better,  but Im no good with ghost ring sights.  We have a scope on one of my friends uppers,  and with that its like pointing and clicking at clays from 100 yards :)

Heh,  I can clean just about every gun I bring in the time it takes my buddy to clean his AR :)

_________________________________
Several years ago while we were gone on vacation, at least one kid, a 16 year old, broke in and stole about $9k worth of shit outta the house, including 7 long guns, and all of our important papers like house/land/vehicle/boat titles, SS cards, birth certificates, $40k worth of US savings bonds (those were reissued). Anyway, nothing was recovered except the little fire box all the papers and bonds were in after laying in a pasture a few months exposed to the weather. Most everything was there except the bonds. In the meantime, I had already got duplicate titles, birth certificates, SS cards, and bonds reissued. Later on, there were several attempts at identity fraud. You talk about a headache. Thankfully the thief(s) didn't find my stash of pistols and 2 long guns. The cops were completely useless in the matter. They told me who they thought did it, but said there was nothing they could do unless he was caught with the goods. Even if a person doesn't own any guns, a small fireproof gunsafe is very cheap insurance for what it'll cost you if someone takes all your paperwork, believe me.

I use to shoot ipsc/uspsa competition in limited class (no comp/brake or other external mods) and often RO'd. Running around behind those open class shooters with comped guns was not pleasant. I guess it's not so much the noise, but the concussion from the blast. Standing 4-5 feet behind a comped pistol shooter resulted in what seemed like 5 times the blast of my gun. A proberly braked gun will direct the muzzle blast in a direction that reduces or completely eliminates muzzle rise and recoil, which is mostly up and back ... towards the shooters head. I've only fired one rifle that was braked, it was a browning A-bolt with the BOSS system. It was effective in reducing rise and recoil, but the blast was awful compared to shooting it with the BOSS removed. My AR only has a flash hider, not a brake.

I know what you mean about the ring sights. I didn't like them at first either. Later on though, I noticed that I didn't have to conciously center the post in the ring, it was just automatic and very repeatable, almost like instinct shooting. I have no problem toppling bowling pins at 200 yards 4 out of 5 shots through the rings. A scope is really not needed with the AR unless you're trying to drive tacks, which mine is fairly capable of. It shoots minute of angle (1 inch @ 100 yards, 2 inch @ 200 yards, etc)with the right loads. Since I suck at shooting offhand with a rifle, all of this is from a bench, of course. Pistol is a completely different story for me.

Haha, your buddy must be picky with the cleaning of his AR. The takedown is fairly fast. BreakFree is the best stuff made, IMO.

Everyone was useless in my theft,

I lived in a 3 story apartment building complex, with about 20 full color digital cameras covering all but a smidgen of parkinglot.  Tell me they couldnt spot someone leaving the building with a 200lb draw horton crossbow?
Must have been on the same floor as me :(   My roomate passed out in the hallway going to get the mail.  Cops and EMS all over the place,  they got him to the hospital ok,  but cops left the apartment as it was :(  unlocked.

Thats kewl about the bonds being reissued

Competition sounds like fun,  neither of us are up to par for it I think though :)
We do watch the skeet and trap shooters,  that looks like fun and might be the next thing I get into,
or at least try.   My friend has a comped Glock,  prolly just me again,  but I dont notice much difference between that and my USP.   Can fire the Glock ALOT faster,  but I dunno if that has to do with the compensator.

:)  we tend to stay at the 100 yard range,  the 200 yarder seems to intimidate me a lil.  Only ever went to it in the winter..  so maybe try it out this summer.  I like the 100 yard cause its right next to the pistol range,  and easy to go back and forth.   lol..  we're "N00bs"

From earlier,  and why I came back,  about AKs and full auto.

I dont think theres an AK with burst fire,  would be nice...  at any rate,  on an AK or AR it makes it class 3,
wich I dont see as being too easy to get a hold of  :(
