Linksys WCG200 - Connection Issues!
« on: May 31, 2006, 08:25:12 PM »
Can someone please help me? No matter what I do, I'm continuing to experience intermittent connectivity with my brand new Linksys WCG200 wireless cable gateway. I've included a screenshot of what my netgraph looks like when my connectivity drops/freezes. :help:

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Yeah, don't use wireless to play Quake 2  :nana:

Seriously though, in a game that requires such a low ping to be accurate (i.e. all FPS games) I'd pick a wired connection over wireless any day.  Wireless might be fine for MP3 streaming, webpage viewing, even streaming video, but for something that requires such a low latency as Q2, nothing beats a physical connection.

If you're set on keeping the connection wireless though, make sure you're not using the default channel (5 or 6 I believe) and change it to Channel 11.  Also, if you have any 2.4ghz phones in your house, unplug them motherfuckers, and move the antennas as close as you can together.

Well, I was using a Netgrear wireless router in combination with my cable modem before, which was working without any problems at all. I always had a nice, steady 40 ping no matter which server I connected to. Once I switched to this setup, my ping reduced even more to ~35, the only draw back now is the short, millisecond-long drop outs.

Update the firmware on it if you haven't already. I have this exact same router over at my parent's and never had this problem when I was over there.

i don't know man, i know i've had the same problem, and a  lot of people have
it's something with the wireless : )
if you ping the gateway, you can see that's where the problem is, from your wireless nic to your router
you see the lag as your netgraph shows
i did some searching on google and didn't find a good answer
if you can notice any difference in the configuration i would take a look there
maybe try wireless without encryption, and change the channel it's on. tell the client to always use that router for it's wireless
maybe that will help

Using wireless without at least WPA/EAP/RADIUS, or WPA with a shared key (WPA-PSK on some routers), is opening yourself up to have anyone use your internet connection.  WEP is totally insecure, and can be cracked quite easily due to a flaw.

If you've updated the firmware and still experience the problem, try changing the angle of the router, and failing that, look for devices that may be interfering...

If you don't have and/or arn't using WPA encryption, perhaps the spikes are from someone else using your bandwidth without your knowledge...

Be sure to set a secure shared key and use WPA-PSK encryption, and check your logs on your NAT/Wireless router frequently using the web interface.
