Video editing terminology
« on: April 06, 2014, 08:52:31 AM »

> I've had a certain video on YouTube for about two and a half years, but it recently got flagged as Content Inappropriate and was thus taken down. Personally, I don't think the video should have been removed since its "inappropriate" content falls into a grey area, but that's a completely different subject, and I'd rather stay off of it. Anyway, I plan to edit the video so that the content in question is removed, while preserving the overall message of the original video. Specifically, I'm going to replace a large portion of the video with a simple slideshow with text and some background music. This brings me to my question; is there a specific term for this type of editing? I'm considering the term "remastered" but I don't think that accurately describes it. I guess "censored" would be closer to the mark, but again I don't feel that's accurate, since nothing was blurred out or blackened out or anything of that nature.

What was removed? We talking titties? Racism? Real-world violent crime? Chopped off racist titties with shwastiker tattoos?

YouTube's as useful as an extra asshole beside your pecker these days. Sure, it might be neat to shit standing up once or twice, but the novelty would wear off after getting shit smeared all over the front of your jeans a couple times. I've had one account flagged 3 times and permanently removed for VERY stupid things. Apparently it was racist. I had some old Johnny Rebel racist country songs from the 50's or 60's that they found objectionable. And yet plenty of other people have had the same Johnny Rebel shit uploaded for years without it being taken down. ::)  And, yeah, it was racist, but while it was promoting racism in a somewhat satirical way back in it's day, it's generally considered pure irreverent comedy these days. And after they locked me outta the account and removed all access to any remaining content, they told me I wasn't allowed to get another account. But... I did. Fuck 'em. I used a different email to register it I think.

It sure would be nice if there were a YouTube-like site out there that had looser content restrictions. Only problem is... you KNOOOOOOW it would get filled up with 90% porn and a lot of people would avoid going there for that reason. Whereas YouTube has legitimate companies advertising with them and they have a responsibility keep their sponsors happy by not letting neo-nazi skinheads post weekly hate sermons. If YouTube changes and goes allowing almost everything, as the saying goes, "Give 'em an inch, they'll take a mile."

I think YouTube has an option whenever you go to upload something to age restrict a video. If it's questionable content, it's probably less likely to get taken down, but there's still a chance.

It's just called "editing".  :)

I had a video of my oldest son I put up there years ago,  It was using the theme song from "Pee Wee's Big Adventure".  In the past couple months the sound was removed because I used that song.  Said the copyright owner didn't give permission (they did up until then).  Dozens of other videos (even illegal videos of the soundtrack) that had it with more view.

Difference was that $$ was made of those videos, not mine.

If you have a clip of a copyrighted movie or song mixed into a video, it might be a good idea to add this little blurb to the comments portion:

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.

@|iR|Focalor

"What was removed? We talking titties? Racism? Real-world violent crime? Chopped off racist titties with shwastiker tattoos?"

> Nah, it was nothing like that. I was recording myself explaining the flagging of another video on my channel when my nephews began interfering and flashed their rear ends and genitalia at the camera. As I said before, this falls into a grey area, since you can't really see their parts clearly. Here's the video in question...

"It sure would be nice if there were a YouTube-like site out there that had looser content restrictions."

> There are plenty of such sites out there, DailyMotion and Vimeo immediately come to mind, although I'm not really familiar with their Terms Of Service. In fact, I have an account on DailyMotion where I've mirrored all of my YouTube videos, and I haven't had any videos flagged down there yet.

"I think YouTube has an option whenever you go to upload something to age restrict a video. If it's questionable content, it's probably less likely to get taken down, but there's still a chance."

> No, I'm definitely not going down that path, since I don't believe in age restrictions in general. I believe everyone has the right to enjoy my content, and I'm not about to inflict a discrimination policy upon my audience based of a factor that they had no decision in and can't change.

"It's just called "editing". "

> True, but "editing" seems too broad a term. I was thinking more along the lines of "defused" or "cleansed" or something like that.

> I just looked up the words "edited" and "censored" in an online thesaurus (I don't know why I didn't think of that before), and came up with a pretty good word to use for the title of my edited video. The word "censored" was pretty close to what I was looking for, but I wasn't comfortable using it because of its negative baggage, especially on YouTube where intellectual cowards false flag and false DMCA videos simply because they don't agree with them. As the result of looking up the word "censored", I ultimately decided to name the edited video, "Fuck SST Records (Sanitized)". Thanks to everyone here for helping me out.
