World Record speed run for Q2 is slow

Has anybody looked at the fastest run through Q2 singleplayer on Hard? I'm assuming the fastest one is on SpeedDemosArchive http://speeddemosarchive.com/Quake2.html#hard and it's not even that fast. Sure he used bunny hopping here and there, but I noticed many spots where he could have strafe jumped a few extra times but didn't. I might try and run through some of the levels he did and see how much I can improve them. I think a lot of us from the Jump Mod community could outdo him.

seems like a big task. i looked at the video link and he pretty much did every shortcut i thought he wouldnt do. plus he uses quad and invul alot, its actually pretty damn fast. its not like you could just plow through every single map, you need to collect things like quad, invul, and bfg, and with monsters constantly shooting at you.

i could probably pull it off, but it would probably take me a while/ multiple tries

This was a segmented run, so each level he could try over and over till he did it properly. And as he stated in his description, he just copied Quake 2 Done Quick 2 verbatim. I was thinking if I copied the route verbatim I could improve upon his times. This speedrunner didn't come up with any original routes actually. You should check out q2dq2 and see for yourself. So the planning is already done for us which makes the run way easier. It be fun to try the first few maps and see how I do. I might do that in a week or two.

Yep. I thought once I upgraded my pc and I had streaming capabilities, I would give a speed run a try. I am sure any jump mod player could smash any of the single segment runs, as well as the segmented ones. I read the SDA forums once and I am not sure what client they are using. You would definitely would want to use a modern client so you can use strafe dodging more effectively than the dude who made Q2DQ. The problem is that the timer program that the SDA members are using, probably doesn't work with R1Q2 probably.

The q2timer mod does not work for R1Q2. I already tried. So you'd have to go blind on the level timing and grenade timers. I've never programmed a mod before, so I wouldn't know where to start with that. It's so evil that the person who made q2timer never made it open source! I tried playing on 3.20 client with q2timer installed, and it was just so gross playing on the old client. I'm way faster with r1q2 with zero mouse acceleration. I ran through the first few levels and felt that I was a little bit faster than the segmented runs. I didn't record anything though. I might later though. I'd love to see some demos/videos of people giving a few levels a run through though.

Nephi: speedrunslive.com. There is a generic timer on that website. It works best for live speed runs. Unfortunately, you have to manually press a hotkey to stop the clock, if you are going to use this for a segmented run.

isn't there a few speedrun mods for qw you could go rip the source from and see how they handle their timer and then implement your own hacked version into q2pro source?

Hmm, what is qw? Quake World? I seriously doubt I have the time to start hacking together my own mods. I also don't think I care about the project enough to do that.
