I would suggest searching piratebay, but because I know Quadz is a professional programmer for his bread and butter, I don't think it would be too kosher for me to post a direct link to any "borrowed" software here, especially when the site has "pirate" in the name. :-[

It is  :WTF: that Microsoft don't have any links. And for Dev-C++ 5.6.0 there is no documentation about Quake 2, but i'm gonna try it.

Hmm, that's kind of...

VS 2010 might have trouble converting the old VC6 project files, but I'd be surprised if it couldn't open ones that were already converted to 2008.

In any case, making the actual project files is somewhat drag and drop. There should be no major obstacle to just using VS 2010.

If you're bent on using the old buggy original Q2 source release, you might just try dropping the Visual Studio project files from R1Q2 into the Q2 source directory. The structure should be mostly the same and they should work with VS 2010.

P.S. I'd forgotten, but I'd made vs2010 project files for Q2 3.21 a few years ago:

So, your files compile fine ? Can i open it with other programs, like Dev-C++ 5.6.0 ? What will happen if i compile only g_spawn or other "g", for example ?

Yes, the project compiles fine for me in VS 2010.  As far as I know, it should in the free Visual Studio Express edition as well.

No idea about "Dev-C++ 5.6.0".

Yes, the "game" code is a sub-project and compiles to a DLL on windows. (gamex86.dll)  It can be compiled independently from the rest of the project.

I strongly recommend VS2010 Express Edition for Q2 development if you are looking for a freebie compiler/IDE since that is what R1ch used for his r1q2 client/server. The link quadz provided gets you the old source but r1ch fixed a lot of bugs that existed in the old sources.

The Express Editions are all available for free download and I believe they all still support building native code in C/C++. I have a paid-for edition of VS2010 Ultimate that still has to redeem itself before I pop for an update so I can't say what the 2013 edition can do or how well it upgrades projects from 2005/2008/2010 editions but I know 2010 was better at upgrading from VC++ 6.0 projects than 2008 was.

If you use other compilers then you are off on your own because unless someone else has experience with those environments you won't get much help.

GCC is used in Linux and the 3.20/3.21 and the r1q2 code all compiles "correctly" on most Linux platforms.

I also have compiled r1ch's code in Xcode on OS X and it works as a server. Clients are more difficult and doing it on a Mac is not recommended for a novice.
