    So there’s this problem with IGN. A lot of the comments lately have been terrible.

    Horrifying is probably more like it.

    While most IGN comments are respectful and productive, we’ve let the abusive comments get to a point where they dominate our discussions. When even just one hostile comment is enough to ruin an entire thread, we’ve got to take our job as curators of our site more seriously. The best way to create an appetite is to feed it and, by letting these abusive comments live on IGN, we’ve been encouraging more of the same. It’s long past time for that to stop.

    Some of what we’re dealing with is an extension of the trash-talking that’s part of a competitive gaming culture. Some of it is just the bold lack of empathy that the facelessness of the internet allows. Some of it is just the natural tendency of some people to find happiness in making other people miserable. The excitement over next-gen consoles and the increasing popularity of games in general means that we’re seeing more new users on the site each and every day. When you add all those factors together, it’s clear we need to pay more attention to our interactions with each other.

Sometimes you just gotta let shit slide and don't dwell on it like it's some serious personal attack on your very soul. It's the internet. When you unplug, it ceases to exist and it ceases to matter. Granted, certain comments may or may not be called for. Hopefully most people I ever said mean shit to over the internet know that on the deepest possible level, I don't really HATE them even if I've said so. I'm not a really friendly guy face to face, but despite my cloudy disposition towards strangers, it should only be considered "apathy", nothing more. I would actually have to GIVE A SHIT about people to be able to say that I "hate" them.

On the other hand, if you're so uptight that you let shit that went on in a different thread 2 weeks ago cause you to write off that person, then eventually EVERYONE is gonna say something you find to be disagreeable. Then you'll be deleting EVERYONE'S thoughts. And that point, the only thing that will dominate discussions is silence and they won't be discussions at all.

Methinks you brought up this topic knowing full well that people would voice negative opinions about you, thus giving you the opportunity to display your ability to biopsy them from the dialogue. People are trolling you? Well be completely honest with yourself. This is YOU trolling THEM. If you truly wanna see a solution here, cut out this "fighting fire with fire" bullshit and instead work on putting OUT the fire and examining what caused the fire in the first place. Just like in chemistry, certain substances can only react to certain compounds you introduce them to. Spontaneous combustion is bullshit. Then again, I don't think you want to be best friends with everyone here anyway. Even when the heat is off of you, you occasionally interject in places with negative comments just like the rest of us. This tells me that you enjoy fucking with people just as much as the rest of us. So instead of worrying about how negative EVERYONE ELSE is "obviously" being, just keep on being an asshole to anyone who's an asshole to you. Seems to be the name of the game around here. No one will think less of you for it.

while that makes sense, i have to say, i haven't targeted anyone for trolling here unless i mention them in a thread. when i post a general thread like this, do i know for certain the same elements are going to comment? No. Is it likely? Yea.

Do i control their minds and force them to comment? No. Do i think that it's possible it will stir up some arguments? Yea. Doesn't mean i'm gonna stop doing what i'm doing on their account. Do i enjoy it? Yea. i like to put people in their place from time to time. trolls will be trolls. that simple

IGN is probably doing it more so as a business incentive. They need to keep their website "clean" so that they don't scare away video game publishers and companies from purchasing "retail estate" on their website.
