Animated textures?

I have an idea for map and I was wondering if anybody knew how to make animated textures, if it is possible.

I have downloaded wally, but it doesn't use GIF's.

I have done a little searching and came up empty handed.

You can sorta animate textures but thet are only snaps of a series of change to each texture - kinda like cartooning. Another thing I tried was making a texture with lava attibutes. You get a swirling thing happening. Hurts too if you touch it...
