Quake 2 Ground Zero Problem
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:17:08 AM »
So, I decided to start playing Quake 2 as I saw it was on Steam, I used to play it a long time ago, but not really when it was released. I bought Quake 2 on Steam and today I found Quake 2 Ground Zero laying around in a game store so I bought it. Now, First of all, does Ground Zero even work with Steam Quake 2? And the second thing is, when I insert my Ground Zero CD it just leads me to Itunes to download the audio (wich is really great as all of you know). I went to DVD and clicked open, that lead me to some files named "Data", "Install", "Splash", "AUTORUN" and "setup" I naturally clicked setup wich lead me to a setup wich gave me three options, Install, More and Quit. Again, I naturally click Install, nothing happens and the setup freezes. So, the splash program does not work. I click on the install folder and finds a program named "setup" It tells me to approve the use of it as an administrator (that came out weird) and I clicked yes. Nothing happens. Does anyone know how to help me? I really like Quake 2, it's amongst my favorite games I think, and sorry for my horrible English. Please help!  :help:

Since the Q2 code was released open source, it's possible to use alternate clients besides the Steam Q2 client.  In fact, you can copy the whole Quake2 folder out of Steam to wherever you like on your hard drive, if you want.

A popular Q2 client for multiplayer gaming is r1q2: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/download/r1q2-websetup.exe

As for Ground Zero, depending on your OS, it may help to right-click on "setup" and go to Properties -> Compatibility, and change it to run with "XP (Service Pack 3)" compatibility.  (Or maybe even "Windows 98" ;) )

Ultimately all you should really need from the Ground Zero disc is a few files, particularly the .pak files and the gamex86.dll file.

So if the installer won't work, it may be possible to copy the files directly.

Thank you very much! It really helped! And I really like this forum, feels so oldschool.

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.
