Who the hell leaves their pc running for a week?
I really don't see the use of leaving it on while im asleep..

Lots of people do. Some businesses do because they remote access them from other places I guess. Some people stay connected to their instant messenger or IRC 24/7 too. I don't leave it on while I'm out or asleep unless I'm downloading something or just plain forget to turn it off. My last machine, I couldn't HELP but notice when it was left on because the CPU and video card fans would always run loud as fuck and sound like a small vacuum cleaner running. This one is so nice, barely any noise at all. I don't have a screensaver set to run, the monitor just powers off after 15 mins being idle, so I gotta come in here and actually CHECK to make sure the tower is actually off sometimes, hehe.

  Linux: 126 days
  OS X: 126 days
  Windows: 67 days

I'll be rebooting the Windows box again soon to apply more updates.

I know you advised against it, but I ended up having to disable all the Windows Updates on my previous WinXP machine shortly after the last time I formatted it about a year ago. Every time it would go to download the updates in the background, it would make those annoying reboots for no reason get even worse. So nice to have a properly built and well functioning system now. I don't even notice any small freezes as I'm browsing online now like it used to do when I was downloading anything in the background. I can damn near run a complete system virus scan now without Quake2 even batting an eye.

I think from now on if I ever need another system, I'm certainly going with some kinda cookie-cutter mass produced model from an online retailer rather than having something "custom built" by one of these shyster local computer shops. The last several times I've had dealings with them, I (or whoever bought the damn thing from them, last one my dad bought off them) have gotten screwed somehow. At least this way they match up the hardware and everything properly. I think I may have already told you about how the last one had a Western Digital HD listed on the invoice yet they ended up sticking in some cheap off-brand piece of junk that went and failed way before a hard disk ever should.

Well, newblet.  I've been using {PC,MS}-DOS since V1.0 in 1981, and MacOS since V6.0.3 in 1989.  UNIX since 4.3BSD in 1986.

That sounds like a reasonable strategy for a mid-range system.  With a mass-produced model, one should be able to check plenty of user reviews prior to purchase.

Myself, I tend to build custom systems, as I usually want very specific hardware.
