fps? whats a good number when checking using cl_drawfps?
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:50:27 PM »
I been trying to get more and more out of my quake and I am coming along fine, but I am a little confused about fps and I have been reading every where about it. When I use the cl_drawfps 1, I get about 488 is my high and 350 is my low. My ping is any where from 14 to 44 depending on what time of day it is. When I use the timerefresh in console I get around same numbers as the showfps so I am assuming that the cl_drawfps and timerefresh is same thing just one is 1 time reading and other is full time reading. I can reach as high as 1288 when tweaking certain settings in my auto.cfg file but I am confused on whether to play it high numbers or low numbers. I truly can not tell a difference between the two. If anyone wants to take a minute to explain for me I would be grateful.

using r1q2 assuming...

cl_async 1 set makes r_maxfps and cl_maxfps different values, cl_maxfps will control your frames sent to the server, so jumpers will tweak this a lot, 66 90 or 120 are good values, just play with one until you get comfy jumping on it :) r_maxfps is your frames rendered, you shouldnt set this higher than a frame rate you can get 100% stable, you should set r_maxfps to a multiple of your monitors refresh rate

the difference between drawfps and timerefresh is timerefresh is essentially a benchmark, it will stop the game for a moment, and it will not cap itself... it just measures how powerful and capable your hardware is... drawfps is used to just check how many frames you are actually rendering at the current time while you play :)

VaeVictis,
 That lets me under stand a little better. I have my network/connection settings according to the graph looking like below

-----------------^----------------------^---------------------------^---------------------------------------------

I mean really smooth with a little hick-up every now and then. The graphics looks awesome to, but what I get is what I would say is video lag because the graph doesn't show a hiccup or anything when it does it. I have my fps pretty stable no matter what map at about 690-720 Fps. I just cant get rid of the lag in what looks to be in the video. Any clues? I know its hard to give remedy when you yourself cant see what I am talking about but I do not know how else to explain it, and yes I am using the R1Gl.

first off.. your post format is... ridiculous...

anyway, you are probably actually seeing tearing which is caused by rendering off sync with your monitors refresh rate

thats why you need to set your r_maxfps to something that you can get totally stable, that is a multiple of your monitors refresh rate

As far as I know the netgraph will only show you the status of your connection so any spike in the netgraph is related to your network connection, not your video's fps.
You could record a demo where you just specate players during the peak hours at Vanilla and then play that demo offline - when you're not connected to the server. If you still see a stutter every now and then it could have something to do with your video or fps.

No one should reply to his posts until he straightens up his posts and gets rid of that stupid crawl and posts in a font size that doesn't require horizontal scroll.
