Ok where do i start.... Ok my ping seems to go higher than usual and i get 2% PL during a game but my brother has a clear connection. i restart my PC and my connection is good again for a bit then it goes back to higher. Also my anticheat is not loading even though it is in my q2 folder. I have changed nothing on my pc, downloaded nothing. I have run virsu scans, malware scans, rootkit scans, and nothing has been found. any ideas what could be happening?

I had the same problem and it was a new version of ZoneAlarm. Never had a problem with it before. My ping would double and got a lot of lag. I would stop and start Zone alarm, and it would be OK for a few hours. Also AdAware would start a scan during game play causing lag.

damn aye maybe thats what it is. you can't go back to an old version cause it says its out of date. time to look for a new firewall. comodo lagged aswell.

Maybe see if it's slower without connecting to a server.  Probably you have latency because your computer is slow.  You could try disabling services and processes that you don't need.

I agree with Elysium. MSE is perfectly valid malware protection and Windows Firewall is all you need. Third party A-V and firewall products are nothing but hype and bloatware anymore. Adding them only complicates the setup and management of your computer with very little benefit over what is already provided by the MS products. It sounds a bit like the fox guarding the henhouse but MSE is just as good as any other product that uses exactly the same techniques without all the splash and expense.

The viruses generally come from the browser doing to much.  Now you run java and the VM has a vulnerablity and you have a root kit.  Now a broswer helper object renders your quicktime, or PDF. More input, more code, more problems.  However it's safe to keep it simple.  You see users review files and can check what the files are.

Realtime protection is nice, to see modifcations to system files, because if you don't see them the TCP/IP stack and Windows itself will be under malicious control.  That leaves using Firefox and noscript as almost a critical choice along with real time protection as a countermeasure.  The Windows APIs will be altered and you won't see their code doing whatever they want, because Windows has been compromised.  The paid programs generally don't take actions like killing processes and rewriting configuration, so the paid anti-virus is limited.

i do like having a third party av though, it catches a LOT that would otherwise slip through

and doesnt AC make a separate connection than quake itself? cause it has to authenticate and connect to an anticheat server? i have seen it drop when the connection to the quake server was perfect

i may not understand it as i dont spend time toying with it to figure stuff like that out but if that is how it works, intermittent AC connection would be unrelated to connection of the quake server, and might have issues because of one router along the different path to the AC server


it does sound like firewall or AV might be hating on AC though
