Electronics and Joule Thief Circuits

So I did some very basic readings yesterday, the basic layout with a small toroid 2N4401 transistor and the 1k ohm resistor: 1.2 volts on the battery draws about 58ma. 

Now the output is 110ma, with a steady voltage across a 1N4148 of 1.45 volts.

This is soley the JT on its own without the timer circuit.  Amazingly enough you can hear the coil / transistor system self oscillating already, with a very distinct humming. 

I'm having trouble rectifying a signal off the secondary.  I might be using to large of gauge wire or just not enough turns yet, I see some experimenting coming up in the near future.

I have a problem with an AC motor. It wont spins but just hums or vibrates. however if u give it a push or manualy do initial spin its does spin.. any thoughts why? can it be the capacitor?

If the motor is seizing up, stopping or what have you, it needs to be replaced or refurbished.  If the motor stays on while stationary it can draw a large amount of current over heat, arch and start a fire.

Can I ask what the motor is used in?

Well to answer that question it would need to be disassembled and assessed for faults or damage.

its an old manual washing machine.
there was a problem with the timer so i replaced it.
when i tried it it wont spin but the motor hums or vibrate. however if i manualy give it a starting turn to the pulsator (that thing in the buttom that spins) it does spin.  So i thought that it might be the capacitor coz i noticed it to be bulging at its side.

Once you help it by turning it, it starts and runs fine 
If so, It sounds like the starter cap is bad.

Yes, it's probably the starter capacitor.

What does it do? There is an extra winding in the motor and a normally closed centrifugal switch on the motor shaft. The capacitor is in series with the switch and the extra winding. When the AC is applied to the motor the capacitor adds enough phase shift to the starter winding to give the motor enough torque in the right direction to get it started. Once the motor is up to a certain speed the switch opens and the capacitor and winding are de-energized and the motor runs on the single AC voltage.

Some fractional HP motors keep the capacitor energized all the time and this can dry them out and make them fail.
