I was wondring...since they have dropped out of the Game Engine Arms race and will stop liscencing their engines, and Unreal seems to be the "winner" by default. What games were powered by the Doom 3 engine?Did anyone liscence it out? I like id,and generally what they do,and I flatter myself in saying I almost understand what they do. I once got to ask John Carmack a question when he was at StonyBrook,a sci fi con that gets lots of big names in upstate New York. And you find the guy who did Grima Wormtongue in the LoTR movies on a panel,Odo cmae for a talk and did the song from the Little Mermaid. He played a chef who wanted to cook the costar crab.
Well,Carmack was there and the question I had was,"Why don't you sit in your basement and create these engines by yourself and sell them yourself and keep all the money?" And his answer was he needs the framework of a game to build the engine for what they need it to do. An engineer's answer! But as an engineer I'd analyze the experience of any given game out now and imagine how things were done and how to improve them. The same engine that did gears of war has done Alice madness Returns as well,so if an Engine is a magical tool like photoshop is to me that one can tell stories in I applaude them for trying. I wonder what would happen if Epic games took over Second Life? Can you make blocks, sew them, together, paint them however you want and use pieces of paper to make them do things with the Unreal engine? That's sort of what one can do in SL<and I make my Lindens selling animated pictures I find on the net. The best seller is Laurel and Hardy dancing.8 Frames of texture slapped on a block, squeezed thin and made as whispy as air, that have a script toeed in its contents that tell it to show this large texture a section of it at a timein a sucession, and this gives the illusion of movement.I also took a long time and carved away the white parts from the GIF frames so they show up clear in the world engine(alpha channels) so when you drop this block it looks like they re dancing right where you put them.Only 75 Lindens,or 50 cents or so. I sell cheap, since I can freely sell copies of the stuff I make since its stuff ingame.Invest time in a project, big or small, and reap the benefits of selling it forever.
I find GIFs on the net, even venture into 4 chan...breast stroking through the porn until I see a explotable resource: a GIF animation I can now DL and craft into a grid of frames with a max dimension of 1024 by 1024(3 megs). Sometimes I get lucky...see a dancing Sprite from some obscure Manga fightiung game. I can harvest that! Turn it into a seelable product if I add or discard the right frames to make a squarish grid so the resolution isn't crippled by the stuffing into a 1024 box process. Otherwise, especially of the many GIF movie snippets we have out there, its a process of me opening a GIF making program to see the individual frames, copying and pasting in a huge expanse of a worktable PSD,and assembling a grid this way. Its a sort of craft, and I've done hundreds in my time. Now I'm experimenting with clothing.A whole industry...people making things and selling them to others. Remember my posts about Fractals a few months ago? I made a dress from a black and gold one, which is merely a template where you have a grid of what you are painting on,in this case an avie's body, head, torso and legs.Imagine a beautiful woman you can just paint a dress onto, because "clothing" are just these layers filled to make it look like this sort of cloth is spread over this part of the body, with alpha channels hiding all else. You have a base Skin, its the bottom layer, and its own industry. And from there you have the templates to make textures to make into "clothes" inworld. Gloves are for the hands and arms section of the torso PSD,shoes and socks the feet and legs PSD...and so on.So an ability with textures will get one far in SL.You make Lindens, and then you sell them to other people in the exchange, for their real money. Some people can make Livings at this,if your standards are low and the term loosely defined. My prices tend to be low,and affordable. Having Laural and Hardy dancing on your lawn next to your flaming throne is Silly. I'd rather people enjoy seeing my stuff, because its Home Decor and that framed moving picture will be shown proudly, and others will come seeking me for a copy...this has happened before.
But the animation that these people wanted were one of a Spurting ManBitz. Like 5 in a row..it was put in some club in the Sex lands and people who saw it wanted their own. 150L a pop, over a dollar,I'll take it. These things sort of sell themselves. You see it somewhere, you right click to see who made it and you open up their profile and look for stores featured in their Picks,or places they like or mesages to people they care about. I do sell porn,in the silly sex adult lands, but I tend towards the funnier sort than serious sex loops. I'm always surprised what sells. I get a lot of impulse buyers...people who wandered in and bout 5 things then realized their a grand down (nearly 10bucks). I also own a few clubs ....so tell ya what I'm gonna do. Instead of me telling you where it is,I'll leave this here and you can send me a message to where I have a bunch of these...its a dating site,so ask and I will...
