Has anyone ever tried this? It's a recent discovery of mine: Dogfish head 90 minute IPA. "The best IPA in America"
First, I'd like to say that I've never been much of a pale ale kind of guy, although I've ordered several as well as IPAs before. I gotta say that I agree; or at least it's the best IPA that I've ever had, and at
9% alc
.
Goes down so easy, loaded with hops(but not as much as some IPA's i've had), and can't taste any alcohol whatsoever. To top things off, they have a 120 minute IPA(12%) and a 180-minute IPA that is 18% alcohol
I've talked to someone who has tried it, but haven't had the pleasure yet. I have expectations of it getting me twice as drunk, twice as fast.
How bout that 90 minute though? Someone has to have tried it........

I'm not much of a fan of the higher alc brews, they usually either taste a little too acidic for my palate or end up tasting more like the alcohol than the other ingredients that are
supposed
to give it any distinct flavor. I forget exactly what makes an ale a "pale ale", but the darker amber color almost looks like a bock. I don't recall seeing it around here but I'll look for it next time I'm at the bottle shop. Sometimes the guy that owns the liquor store by me will break a 6 pack and sell singles of odd stuff to his regulars like me.

nothing like a boch or any amber-colored ale, for that matter. IPA's have the most hops, so I generally associate the taste with it(hops).. I don't know how accurate that is though, just a prejudgment of mine. I think that the high alcohol is nicely proportioned with the large amounts of ingredients(complimenting each other / canceling each other out), ends up being surprisingly mild without a taste of alcohol whatsoever.

Well to be honest, I don't think I've tried all that many 6%+ alc/vol brews. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that wasn't some cheap gas station ghetto beer was Paulaner Salvatore Double-Bock. It was something maybe I'd get a pint of at a pub and then move on to something else, but after 2 or 3, it started tasting a little acidic.
I was thinking about getting some supplies this summer to expand my home beverage making efforts. I'd really like to grow my own wheat and barley. I don't think I could do hops or grapes, they'd probably take longer than one season to develop enough to yield anything useable. I had a huge surplus of sweet corn last year that I couldn't eat, sell, or hand out, but this year I'll probably grind it all down to make a shitload of corn whiskey mash. It really wasn't for eating last year, I mainly planted it around the perimeter of other stuff to lure any foraging critters away from the more valuable stuff.
