Can't fix XP....

I've been having problems with my version of XP.
First off it's an upgrade to XP Home from 98 Millenium Ed.
Second Off, there's no uninstall point
I've heard of a site that you can use to re-install/repair to a full XP system without wiping everything off my C:\ drive.
Reason for repair: Some programs won't run anymore: Windows Media Player, ATI Tray Tools, and my video out to my TV doens't work.

You can re-install without haveing to wipe the C drive.
During the install after you select the partition to install it on, choose to leave the file system intact instead of formating it.

It's odd I can't get the installer to work.
I place the CD in the drive, the autorun kicks in, but any attempt to install or scan the system brings up an error mesage. (See attached pic)
I think I know what I need to do (but I'm dreading doing it)
I'm going to have to backup all my files and do a complete rebuild of my computer!!!! W00T!

Personally I never re-install without formatting. I have 3 partitions, so I save the useful stuff and format the C. It saves a lot of error later on. I have a cd for the software that needs to be installed and a cd for the drivers of my system. When I need to re-install everything, I'm usually up and running again like I was before in 2h30. And I don't run into those weird errors.
So if you can back up your useful data somewhere, other partitions or burn a cd, I suggest you do that then format and re-install everything.

I think you can do a fresh install with an upgrade version as long as you have the old Windows CD, I think, not sure since I've never fooled with the upgrade versions myself.
Try booting from the Windows XP cd instead of running the installer in Windows.
If that fails you can use something to boot, such as Knoppix, and delete your Windows folder and try the install again.
I've done plenty of Windows re-installs without formating with no errors.

It may supprise ppl, but I have never had to format my Root drive, ever.
So, time to drink sum beer and give it a shot.

if you have internet still working on that box just update the drivers and the programs for all.
download sp2 for windows xp it fixes a bunch of problems. you might have some old legacy programs on there that need updates. but all the above you mentioned should work win xp

Ok......So....I'm uh back....but nothing has changed...I can't format my C: (mainly because it is the root drive.....I try to run in safemode command prompt but it runs as the windows safe mode with a ghey (_)_) terminal.
How the fudge do I format this MFthing if I can't, well, format it!?

oh ya, one thing to keep in mind when reinstalling from an upgrade....it incluides the full version on the upgrade disk, it will simply ask you to insert the old version just to verify that you own it but you are able to do a fresh full install without installing a single file off the old version of windows. Never reinstall the old os first and then the upgrade.

Ok I'm good now.....got a new install and I'm running smoother than ever.
Picked up a program called WindowsWasher, a handy little proggy. It cleans up XP's useless temp files that are left after shutdowns.
