Your First Computer
« on: October 27, 2010, 11:12:57 AM »
What was it? When? Some story, recollection - whatever.....

I was a late adopter. We were all using 386/25's at work in 1994 but there were rumours that our IT dept were using 486/25's. Whoa...sweet. If only...All our equipment was Compaq.

So I went out shopping for my first home computer. The high end available then was the 486/100 so I went for it. Naturally no sound card, no modem, no video card (whats that?) and no network card. So I sprung for all of those and parted with $1800. I did get 2 floppy drives though. Managed to get Microsoft Office (or it could have been Lotus) from work and I was set. Soon discovered games and the rest is history. When I first ventured out onto the internet it was with a 14.4 modem so I would watch the screen get painted line by line untill all was revealed. In spite of that it was all fascinating. About a year later a friend decided to buy the first Pentium 100 with a 1 Gig(!) hard drive. He assumed this would do him for life. Total cost - $5000.
Who knew we would advance to the levels where we are today. And we're still going...

My first was a timex sinclair that my Dad and I assembled.  Kinda like a Heathkit.  That was followed closely by the Commodore 64.

8088 - 8mhz - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_8088

10 meg hd

green monochrome 13 inch monitor,  weird thinking about the progression from that to cga, vga, and supervga

5 1/5 inch floppy (forget the capacity, 512k?)

1200 baud modem

I forget the ram,  something really really low

no mouse

went from that to 386, 486, pentium, pentium 2 (used the p2 up till a few years ago for q2) skipped p3's and went straight to p4's

Remember the excitement anticipating each new processor release, and the coveted 9600 baud bps modems.

Actually played q1 on the 33k modem for about a week before we went to cable.

I always had hand me downs. But the first one that I remember having was back in 99 I believe. It was like 133 mhz fast. And it ran Windows 95. I was on it all day, despite how slow the bastard was. Throughout the years we kept getting more hand me downs until May 2003 when we got a new computer. I built it with my older brother. It was 1.1 ghz fast and it was fast enough for Quake II  That was my first actual computer I adored

Did you spring for the 16K memory upgrade? :) I did. I've still got that sucker too. I used cassette tape to "bload" :) programs... Still got a drawer full of those as well.

I guess my first "home" PC was that timex sinclair.

Hand-me-down Commodore 64 that belonged to my older sister. I only used it for video games though. One of my favorite games was called Potty Pigeon. You were a pigeon that would get points in a set time period by pooping on cars, bicyclists, and the occasional hawk that was worth more points. :D
