The Science Channel (some sister station of the Discovery network) taught me something today:

"An octopus is smarter than a monkey because we put crabs in a jar that are too large to be removed from the opening in the jar. A monkey will continually try to remove the crabs from the jar until he is forced to break the jar. An octopus is smarter because it learns that it cannot remove the crabs and therefore finds a way for itself to enter the jar"

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if a Monkey is rational enough to think the following, then it must be smarter than the octopus:
"I am a monkey. I am bigger than a crab. This crab is too big to be removed from the jar. Therefore I will not fit inside of the freaking jar!"

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Actually crows are pretty smart. I watched a program on them and they were one of the few creatures who could get to a food reward by understanding 3 levels of the process. In other words I must first go thru this hoop, then peck on this button and finally go to the other side of the box and peck THAT button to get the food pellet. Other animals tested floundered around at one level with no success.
