Sounds: When is bump1.wav played in Quake II?
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:57:30 PM »
When is bump1.wav played in Quake II :?:  I've never heard it before until I almost got finished with my :sonic1: sound effects.
I looked in the pak0.pak file and saw it in there.

There were things left in the final release from development that were actually not used in the game. I think there was a flare gun that was never used but was found in an update pak later released. I don't think the powerscreen was really used either, they mainly used the powershield, although there are a couple of custom maps that people made later which included the powerscreen as a usable item found on their map. I think the idea of the powerscreen versus the powershield was that the powerscreen only protects the player from frontal attacks whereas the powershield is equally as effective no matter which angle you are hit from. I'm pretty sure if you shoot a "brain" from the front, it does less damage to it than if you hit one in the back because of it's powerscreen.

Seems to me like the bump1.wav should've been used for falling off an object for a short distance. Normally, if you fall a short distance off something you only hear the footstep sounds when you hit the ground. If you fall a little farther, you'll hear the fall2.wav which is the player making a painful grunting sound. If you fall far enough to receive any falling damage, it plays fall1.wav which is the player making a painful grunting sound in addition to what sounds like bones breaking or splintering.

No, the sound you're thinking of is land1.wav.
And, due to the first part of your post, will not include the sound in any releases unless proof of usage is found.

Change it to something really obnoxious,  then see if you hear it at all when you play.

The string, bump1 is never used in the 3.21 sources. It probably wasn't used in 3.20 either. No telling if it was ever used at all.

Ok, I'm not using it. For a bit of candy, it was originally going to be the sound you here when you break open a monitor, defeat an enemy, etc.
I think that if it was used, it would be for when you bump into an enemy.
