Computer babysitter
« on: July 01, 2010, 01:53:55 PM »
Just that,  looking for a good key logger that would also keep track of websites visited,  links clicked, chat chatted etc...

Kids are 4, 9, and 12 and the oldest are getting around on the net now.
While we keep a pretty good eye on things there have been a few slips here and there with things we didn't know about.

The oldest is going to catch on to the fact we monitor her email,  and just a matter of time till a friend lets her know about free web mails,
if it hasn't happened already.

We have a free one from the schools bought by the local police department,  but it is very limited.
Doesn't log keystokes even,  just looks for keywords and displays their context.

Anyhow,  havn't researched enough yet,  was just wondering if anybody had some good ideas.

Thanks

ya know... they will hate you o.o

looking from the kids perspective... and i have people agreeing with me on this... you might have to worry about middle of the night knifings...

if you want to keep an eye on your kids, educate them about child molesters and stuff, let them know what not to do for their own safety, and put a surf block on so they cant look up porn (although you may still get killed for that a few years from now when they are older)

I'm probably going to agree that a keylogger seems extreme, but from what you describe of the software that you already have, it sounds like an incredibly useful safety tool.

Education about threats is probably the best weapon, however children can be uncontrollable. I used to work at company where the owner's daughter was continually talking to older men online and was caught sending inappropriate pictures twice. It's mostly the owner's fault because they just didn't seem to discipline her properly. The first time, they probably just took her brand new iPod away for 15 minutes.

I sympathies with your frustration. I've got a ways to go before I start tackling these problems. The best advice that I've heard is from some radio child psychologist who did a speech during one of the events where I work: "The best kind of discipline is the kind that you decide on. Any discipline is worse than none, and you don't want the world to do the disciplining for you. That's how kids end up in jail."

So if you go with some kind of keylogger, regardless of the kid's reaction, it's the right choice because you made it. A mad kid that is safe is better than a happy kid that's not.

Made me giggle :)  Bof of yas

Bedroom door has a lock

Kids can't hate on what they don't know about  :)  Wife had a peek at our girl's diary and waited WEEKS till there was something to go on from another type of source before asking about it.

Education is ever ongoing,  BUT,  I still have to tell my son not to throw toys around the house at least every other day, so.....

I had a pm to this with a few other tips,  and should be ok for now.

ya know... they will hate you o.o

looking from the kids perspective... and i have people agreeing with me on this... you might have to worry about middle of the night knifings...

God knows you've probably already frantically stabbed your pillow with your girl scout knife during a temper tantrum you had after shit didn't go your way at a Friday night KOTH.

if you want to keep an eye on your kids, educate them about child molesters and stuff, let them know what not to do for their own safety, and put a surf block on so they cant look up porn (although you may still get killed for that a few years from now when they are older)

Be sure to educate your kids about people like Vae too so that they won't grow up to be as retarded as him. (Not that he's "grown up" at all, which is my point)

 ::) Anyway...

I gotta disagree with the sentiments so far. It's YOUR house. YOU pay for the computers. They are YOUR kids. If you think a keylogger is the best way to go, by all means do it. I think it might be kinda time consuming to spy on your kids like that though. Probably a better idea just to keep the PC in the same room where you often sit and watch TV where you look over and see what they're doing. Maybe have a key for the power or keep the power cord in a secure place so they can't use it when you aren't around. Just don't be one of those parents who's way over-protective, authoritarian, and unreasonable. You'll probably find that if you try too hard to control your kids by forcing them in the direction you want, they'll fight against you even harder and/or act out even worse the first unsupervised opportunity they get. Seriously, if you never give a kid a taste of freedom and independence, they won't know how to handle it responsibly when they ever DO get the chance to taste it. They'll go nuts doing all the bad shit ALL AT ONCE that they've been prevented from doing for so long. If they're gonna do bad shit, probably better to let them spread it out more. It might save you from one day having to explain to the police why your burning car is smashed into your neighbors living room. :D

Would not be good,  the neighbor is also the landlord.

PC is in the main living room,  one windows account,  and it's passworded.
Usually don't shut it down all the way so password is very rarely used.

Not as overbearing as this thread is making me out to be  :-[

I'm a little teeny tiny bit irked by the fact that your wife reads your kids diary... But I guess I'm a lot more irked that your kid or kids even HAVE a diary. When will people learn that NOTHING good comes from writing in a diary because someone who isn't supposed to read it... one day WILL read it. So many people in this world might not be living the rest of their lives in prison had they had the common sense NOT to document their every thought and action in a diary. If I had kids, I would probably forbid them from writing a diary. I just don't feel comfortable with it. People should just go somewhere quiet to sit and reflect and meditate on things rather than leaving themselves open to the criticism of others by doing such things. To each his own, I guess, but I really abhor the idea. If you're gonna chronicle your thoughts and feelings, it's probably a better idea to do it through graphic art or poetry... or at least BURN your diary once a year after you've had the chance to read through it and reflect on things. Bottom line, diaries make Focalor cringe. If my woman had one and I happened to find it, I'd eventually be tempted to read it, and I'd feel INCREDIBLY guilty afterwards. Just a needless can of worms waiting to be opened, a monkey wrench waiting to be tossed in the cogs of the machine, and a christmas waiting to be fucked up.
