Extremely jerky framerate under certain circumstances
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:04:24 AM »
Once I bound that >CG< type binds to my movement keys and it made me jerk so badly I couldn't hit anything. (Not that I want to do this, but I was wondering what causes it.) Also, whenever I fire the hyperblaster or somebody fires the hyperblaster at me, my view starts really hitching and I get yellow spikes in the netgraph. Worse yet, whenever I run into places like the SSG room in q2dm3, there tend to be multiple players shooting the HB which really makes me jerk. The other thing that really causes me to jerk is when I get killed with the RL/GL. When that happens, my view freezes for half a second then jerks wildly around. (Not that that matters much either; I'm just wondering.) Finally, when I shoot the chaingun, my jumping ability drops dramatically and I cannot circle-strafe-jump. :-\ :? Another really nasty problem is that sometimes when I shoot the railgun nothing comes out. :ohreally:

Also, what does the "rate" command actually do? I have to set it down to 4000 to avoid making weird saw-shaped netgraphs which results in horrible jerkiness. I thought cl_maxfps controlled packets/second. :|

I have 256kbps download speed and 64kbps upload speed. When I connect to Russian servers, I only ping about 160-170 rather than my normal 50-60 to tastyspleen. My connection is fast, but low bandwidth.

edit: yes, my cl_async is set to 1, and r_maxfps is 240. I get around 140 FPS all the time with r1gl and dynamic lighting turned off.

Any ideas as to what is causing it? :?: :?: :?:

I dunno... sounds like lag is causing it. Hope this helps.  :lolsign:

What OS you using ? I've had similar problems on windows vista/windows 7,are you video drivers and sound drivers up to date?
Try gl_swapinterval "0" and see if that makes any difference, maybe try some gl_picmip to smoothen it out a bit.

Also,do you have a single-core cpu or duel core cpu?
I've had friends who lag like a fucking nuscince on vista/dualcore  :ubershock:

Let me know, good luck with the bullshit too.
 :frag:

ANd also,as for the RG not firing, thats simple packet loss man.
I get PL as 30-90% and even 200% packet loss, its tough to deal with at times, other times its fine, type "lag" cmd to find out if you have any packet loss at the given moment.

HAHA haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. But seriously.

Sounds like you might be using an old video card or processor. Back in the day, some people would actually use hyperblasters to intentionally lag folks with slower PCs and connections because of the amount of memory it takes to draw all the projectiles. I guess anyway, sounds good.

I'm not too sure what r_maxfps does. Rate doesn't really change that much that I've noticed. I keep it maxed out anyway. Your cl_maxfps can be important though. Anything lower than 100 and you won't be able to make certain box jumps anymore.

I'm not really sure what the noticeable advantages are to disabling dynamic lighting. To be honest, ain't got a clue in hell what mine is set to. One of these days I'm gonna get off my ass and get around to reading up on R1CH's forums about the suggested settings for r1q2 + r1gl + hi-res textures.

Anyway, it might be helpful if you'd post more info about your PC. CPU, video card, input devices, etc.

You don't need your r_maxfps at 240.. if it's r1q2 put cl_maxfps at 30 and r_maxfps at 90 or 120. I think anyways..

cl_maxfps

      30
If cl_async is enabled, cl_maxfps controls the number of packets per second to send to the server. If cl_async is disabled, this controls both the network and rendering FPS.

   r_maxfps

      1000
If cl_async is enabled, r_maxfps controls the maximum number of frames rendered per second. If cl_async is disabled, this controls both the network and rendering FPS.

so assuming cl_async is enabled, you dont want your client doing anymore than 90 or 120 fps (preference, anything above feels horrible though). how is it  :nosign:

Yeah, anything higher than about 120 is pretty unnecessary. Too much higher and I think the server will kick you for eating up too much bandwidth. You'd probably want to have at least 100 though so you can do the box jump to the grenade launcher on q2dm8.

'rate' limits the amount of data the server may send to you per second.  Whereas cl_maxfps controls the number of packets per second your client sends to the server.

Yellow lines in the netgraph means the server discarded some data it would otherwise have sent to you, because it would have exceeded your set rate limit.

Since you have cl_async 1, you should be able to keep your cl_maxfps pretty low (30 or so?)  I don't think you mentioned its current setting.

Regards,

I use cl_maxfps "120".
I used to use 59, but I found it highly annoying being unable to jump up the boxes to the GL from the floor on q2dm8.

I have dynamic lighting off because otherwise I get ~4 FPS.
gl_swapinterval was "1", but I set it to "0" and now get ~160 FPS. :)
I am leaving gl_picmip as "0" because raising it just blurs everything.

PC: Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
CPU: Mobile Intel core II duo T5300 1.7 GHz (it throttles back its speed when the temp gets too high)
BUS: 533 MHz
RAM: 2 gigs DDR2
Video card: Moble Intel 945 Express (shared video RAM, refresh rate 60 Hz)
Connection type: WiFi
Connection speed: 256 kbps down, 64 kbps up
Mouse: wireless USB mouse (one question: how do I disable that ANNOYING acceleration??? I tried using directinput, and that cleared a lot of it)
Keyboard: basic QWERTY keyboard in my laptop

Video card: Moble Intel 945 Express (shared video RAM, refresh rate 60 Hz)

I can't tell you how many folks I've heard from that have this Intel onboard shared video bullshit on their "not too old" laptops. The laptops were current as of a couple years ago, yet they can't comfortably play games from 10 years ago on them. There probably isn't too much you can do to get it running as smooth as everyone else.

I was thinking that your mouse could possibly have something to do with it, but since it's a USB and a laptop, I doubt this could possibly be an issue. On my old machine, if I use a PS/2 mouse, I get a laggy snappy frame rate when looking left or right, but its perfectly smooth if I use a USB one.

As far as mouse acceleration, if you're using r1q2, there should be an option to turn that off. If you go to options, then to "R1Q2 Options", there should be a setting there called "xp mouse acceleration fix". Set that to "enabled".

Also, if you're using a wireless mouse, you will probably get a small amount of lag in your mouse movement. You might have even more lag from your gl_swapinterval setting. I noticed that having gl_swapinterval set to "1" lagged my mouse aiming a lot. It's bad enough having ping lag the time that it takes to click and actually fire the shot, but it's even more frustrating when you gotta move your mouse earlier than expected to compensate for a shitty aiming lag too. From my understanding, people with LCD displays need to have it set to "0" and people with fat-assed CRT monitors are better off using "1".

Oh my gosh!!! directinput mouse was set to "buffered". I set it to "immediate", and my controls now react really fast :ubershock: :rocketleft: !!! No wonder I could hardly tell the difference between 50 and 150 ping! LOL I gues I will be able to now! I had always thought that the slow-down-stop-then-speed-up-the-other-way was just the way Quake II worked. It was actually my controls. Now I can make that HB-GL jump a significant amount of the time :frag: .

Thank you!!! :bananaw00t:

No. Realistic's game is so laggy that it has a negative framerate and actually goes BACK in time. IN REVERSE! And he still pwns yer ass, that's just how good he is.
