gaetano -- who said a real lunar lander *wasn't* more complex? You're getting too hung up on those descriptions. These aren't meant to go to the moon. It's meant to provide a challenge to spur work on private rocket. And on that basis, as Carmack said, it succeeded spectacularly. And you're simply mistaken if you think these are "just toys". The same technology Carmack is developing will take them to 100km, and later, to orbit.

I hope my previous comments are viewable by the public...we have a right to knpw how our tax dollars are being spent...people are homeless hungry and angry ....your NASA budgets are outragious, who's pockets are getting packed?...i want to see the cost of every single penny spent on contracts, materials,supplies,etc....

IIRc, the challenge was issued in order to promote private research into autonomous lander control systems. The problem with Apollo 11's LM was guidance. The system was seat of the pants with RADAR altimeter and a landing computer that was overloaded due to mis-configuration of some toggle switch(es) prior to descent. The forced Neil and Buzz to take extreme measures to get past a crater and some rocks to land safely. The point of automatic control is for better landing guidance and for unmanned landers capable of handling some rough terrain at the lunar poles where they want to establish some bases. Automated missions for supplies and equipment prior to and in support of manned bases is essential. After all, we can't count on the greys for everything.
