Q2 launching/version problems
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:25:11 AM »
Been having problems with my Q2 since last week.

I entered a game and my graphics really felt different, almost a software quality to them but not.  Everything
seemed oversensitive and when I turned everything got real choppy.  I kept turning too early and running into walls.
This morning on a hunch I typed version into the console and received this:

"version" is "3.20 x86 Oct 16 1998 Win32 RELEASE"

Ok that's not right.  I use gamespy3D to enter games and it has always launched through R1Q2.
So this time I launched from the r1q2.exe on my desktop, got in vanilla and typed version and got this

"version" is "R1Q2 b6377 x86 Jan  4 2006 Win32 RELEASE"

graphics are all back to normal and everything is great.

Anybody have any idea why or how I can fix this in gamespy3d? In GS it says its using r1q2 before I select a server but when I get in game its not.
I remember years ago when I got r1q2 I did sometheng in Gamespy to fix this but now I can't remember why.

(I know, I know I should upgrade my R1Q2, but thats not the issue here now :) )

I dont use Gamespy3d myself but have you also tried looking for a solution over here ? : http://www.gamespy3d.com/using/quake2.shtml

Do you have checked the "Quake 2 working folder" at menu GameSpy -> Games and filters menu option in Gamespy3d and set it to the right folder and executable (r1q2.exe) ? And check also your cfg at menu GameSpy -> Player Profiles -> Edit

Well, you could always just add a few of your favorite server IP's to the Quake2 address book, then launch the R1Q2 client and go to the multiplayer menu to select a server to join.

Gamespy? Is that crap still around? :WTF:

Sounds like there's some setting in Gamespy that is automatically launching the game through the 3.20 exe. Perhaps you could just move the original "quake2.exe" to a backup folder and then rename "r1q2.exe" to "quake2.exe" if there is no way to select which exe to open when Gamespy launches the game.

Well, you could always just add a few of your favorite server IP's to the Quake2 address book, then launch the R1Q2 client and go to the multiplayer menu to select a server to join.

Another approach that has worked well for me has been to define some aliases in baseq2/autoexec.cfg, like:

alias go500   connect tastyspleen.net:27999
alias gomut   connect tastyspleen.net:27910
alias gorailz connect tastyspleen.net:27911
alias govan   connect tastyspleen.net:27912
alias gosher  connect tastyspleen.net:27913
alias goctf   connect tastyspleen.net:27914
alias godm    connect tastyspleen.net:27916
alias goxq    connect tastyspleen.net:27917
alias gopyg   connect tastyspleen.net:27918
alias goxat   connect tastyspleen.net:27919
alias goxr    connect tx.tastyspleen.net:27929
alias got1    connect tastyspleen.net:27930
alias got2    connect tastyspleen.net:27931
alias got4    connect east.tastyspleen.net:27930
alias goudml  connect tastyspleen.net:27990
alias gojump  connect east.tastyspleen.net:27940

So I just click the R1Q2 icon, which automatically brings up the console, and I type "govan" (or whatever) and... that's it.

Regards,

In Gamespy.. Q2 menu ,  drop down to Q2 game settings _options , then games , general  game settings, on right side shows what program and location for what  exec. you use to start q2.. R1 or regular q2 client. Your choice as what you want..

Been using this option for years to switch back between clients.

Server Browser at GSpy still is broke has been for long time now..   :humm:

R1ch's browser is pretty cool. It has the advantage of using an active master server. All the ASE and GS3d masters are dead.

I use ASE and keep the servers I am interested in playing in the favorites lists, high maintenance if the servers move.

For GS3d, the game executable is in the Games and Filters dialog, Alt-G-G, scroll down to Quake2 and change the command line entry. See image attached.

DM server is fucked. 2 point blank rockets from spawn and lava damage and player survived? WTF?" Also someone has fucked with the spawn points, every single time no matter how big the map you spawn right in front of the person who killed you last
