So can anyone explain why my packet does not have a spike in it at the 7th hop?

Mine
6    38 ms    39 ms    39 ms  rc1sj-pos1-0-0.cl.shawcable.net [66.163.77.86]
7    49 ms    50 ms    49 ms  eq-sanjose-10G.theplanet.com [206.223.116.148]

ijag's
6    40 ms    41 ms    39 ms  rc1sj-pos1-0-0.cl.shawcable.net [66.163.77.86]
7   101 ms   103 ms   101 ms  eq-sanjose-10G.theplanet.com [206.223.116.148]

Is there something different in the packets that ijag sends compared to mine?  We are both located in North Vancouver, BC.  We both use Shaw and are playing the same game?  So I can't see why his packets should be treated differently than mine down in San Jose.?   Could they be flagged differently as they come out of the Shaw network.  Sorry if that sounds silly as I am a complete noob with computers.

ijag I PM'ed you some info you can send to Shaw to ask them the above question.

I've been noticing some strange packetloss and the occasional spikey green mountain range of identical peaks on my netgraph followed by a thick red bar of PL.

I ran some traces and there seem to be 2 points that are consistently having problems (about once every couple minutes)

1,  208.57.243.65,10ms,lgb-access01.mpowercom.net,----
2,  208.57.15.97,8ms,208.57.15.97.mpowercom.net,----

That one will spit back a 120ms-300ms ping once a minute or so.

This one goes off the deep end and spits back 600-900ms pings every couple minutes.

try
ping "your gateway" -t
and
ping "tastyspleen server ip" -t

let them both run at the same time, with the Windows version of ping you only send every second, so you'll need to run it for a few minutes to see if your rate of packet loss is low.  If you see "requested timed out" no response was received.  When you kill the command with ctrl+C, you'll see how many were lost.

If you see packets drop to the gateway as well, the problem is probably local.

Was experiencing my usual packet loss on Vanilla sunday nite so I thought I would do a ping trace. This is the first time I've checked it from Nova Scotia. My assumption was the problem must be local since it is less sophisticated here than in Ontario. Seems like the local ISP is good (Aliant) and the problems are in Dallas (the Planet.com). Any way to by-pass these guys?

Haha.  No, tastyspleen is hosted at theplanet. :)

However, that trace is misleading...  Different traceroute programs use different methods, ICMP or UDP based traces.

Sometimes routers don't answer one or the other kind of packet.

So, in this case theplanet routers are just not responding to the particular kind of trace packets sent by Ultima Online Trace Utility.
