Anyone playing Q2 with ZoneAlarm Pro: Latest update problem

I've had ZoneAlarm Pro for the last few years.  Very few problems; only minor annoyances at times.  However, I downloaded and installed
the latest update 5.0.590.015 and have serious spikes and packet loss whenever playing Q2 multiplayer now.

This latest "security" update contains a couple of new features, one of which is an "Antivirus" monitor.  So, once I started having these connection issues in the game (constant on/off phone plugs), I turned off the new ZA antivirus feature.  Didn't help.  The only way I can play the game now online is to turn ZA off (and run the built in XP firewall for some protection when I turn off ZA).

So, if you run ZA Pro and have had Q2 line condition problems (aka Phone Plugs and constant spikes on the Net Monitor), be aware of what's going on with this latest update.  I'm emailing them about it and hope they correct it soon.

Slik, that really sucks. I've been using ZA (free) for a long time and never had any problems with it, but I haven't updated it in a couple years. I just use it for the outgoing alert feature anyway.

This reminds me of the mcafee AV problem I had years ago. They were no help in the matter and I switched to norton. Hope they fix the issue!

I ended up uninstalling ZoneAlarm Pro and reinstalling the previous iteration that didn't have the issues.

i use hardware firewall/ along with software but i use black ice ..from time to time i get flooded by the xquake server but it goes away pretty quick.
humm usually i manually scan for viruses and just have my anit-virus software shut off

Hey.. i know this is old.. but wondering if i can get helpp... when i wanna play q2 i have to turn ZoneAlarm off (latest.. free..) cos when i go into multiplayer and it looks in that address book for servers i saved, the computer crashes and q2 says "searching for serverrs...." and it only usually does that for like a split second, but it stays like that and locks up.. anyone know why>

Go to Zone Alarms program controlls and click add, browse to your Quake 2 client, give it both internet and server permission.

Reason it's getting stuck is you can't see the pop up from zone alarm asking if it's ok to give it permission, sometimes I forget to add it after a reinstall, usually just alt+tab to it and click allow.

Whats my Q2 Client? I use standard Q2 with a different pak file.. its in C:/Quake2 so which file is my client? thanks

If your using the standard Q2 then it should be "quake2.exe"
