Any setting to make spawning upon map rotation quicker?
« on: April 15, 2019, 09:31:03 PM »
While on the DM server, I often get the impression that most people are loading up the next map quicker than I am. I frequently end up telefragging someone else when the map loads up (indicating that they were on the pad before me), and I often spawn hearing other people already collecting weapons, or otherwise seeming to be moving around and being active quicker than me. My ping is fairly low (upper 30s), Quake 2 is running on a fairly quick SSD, I'm on an i7-6700K processor (plenty quick for a twenty year-old game), etc., etc.

So, is there a setting I can fiddle with that might help this? Is this something to do with the number of hops to the server or something? Anything I can check into to see if I can tweak to speed this up?

I'm not sure about the precise circumstances but the hops and lag probably affect the reconnect latency.

A server can be configured to force respawn. (dmflags has bit 10 set (value 1024))
This forces a player to be respawned upon death after a brief time even when he doesn't press the fire button.
If force respawn isn't set then it waits for the player to press the attack button to initiate respawn.

Intermission and map change is a bit different.
The client loads and parses the new map data and precaches the models, textures and sounds when the intermission expires. There is also a window of time during the intermission when you can press the attack button and terminate the intermission and reconnect. If you're waiting for the intermission to end then this might explain why you're "late to the game".

Ya know, I'm not sure if I click the attack button in between maps. I'll have to spam it like mad from now on and see if that makes a difference :D Thanks for the tip!

R1Q2:
cl_defermodels [0/1]
Defer model loading for faster connection times, but can cause stuttering when first entering the map. Default 1

But it's already on by default. I can't say that I notice any difference but who knows.

Nicotine has never been addictive to me, whatsoever, no matter how many years I've smoked or how many I smoke a day.

I'll give this a shot. Mine was set to 0 actually (and I've never heard of this setting, so I haven't messed with it). Maybe this will make a noticeable difference. Thanks!

Some servers seem down currently Quadz, don't know if it's just a hiccup that'll fix itself, maintenance or what, but just in case, I mention it.

It's always been that if you mymap and disconnect before the map goes live, it's deleted from the queue.

Occasinally, someone will stick around until their map loads, and THEN disconnect, which is not appreciated. (Currently the only recourse is a full mute, as there's no provision for blocking just mymap usage.)

At least these days, the chosen map has to be roughly compatible with the number of players active on the server. (No more mapping sewer64 on a 3-player server; etc.)

Any way to prevent people from trolling with mymap? By that I mean they join the server, mymap a map, then immediately discconnect, forcing whoever's playing to play a map that nobody there necessarily wanted to play in the first place. Maybe have it check to see if the player who issued the command

Seems like that did the trick, quadz. I'm sure everyone is happy to have their lower pings back :) Thanks!

OK, they made a routing change that appears to have resolved the issue I was seeing here.

Everyone else's pings back to normal?
