Q2 Training Camp / Re: New Duel Guide by Myrmidon^

:)

great, that's exactly what I was looking for, I want to try to make some duel maps !

could you maybe give a comment about marics_d2 ? thinking about something in this style.

Never played marics_d2 to be honest. My favourite duel maps are dm1, rdm1, and koldduel1. They all contain a lot of depth and balance.

I played Quake 2 for about 22 years, and in that time I've seen players come and go, but every now and then a player passes away. No matter whether they were known or unknown, friend or foe, it's always sad news. Over the years as the Quake 2 population shrunk, the Quake 2 community feels more like a family, so it's always sad when we lose someone.

I never knew Quadz very well, but may he rest in peace.

It was quite fast. Luckily no personal deets were required.
Still...

Yeah, it's completely anonymous and you don't have to provide any personal information.

There are a few demographic questions but they are harmless.

The survey is open until the 31st of July. I would much appreciate it if more people would participate. It's very short and won't take more than a couple of minutes!

Cheers!

Yo,

I'm doing my postgraduate research on the relation between game trailers and company reputation. If you are a gamer then I would much appreciate it if you would participate in the survey. It only takes a few minutes to complete.

Here is the link: https://ljmu.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/video-game-trailer-survey

Thanks!

Nice - got any thoughts on other maps?

Everything in that guide can be applied to any map. Strategy, tactics and experience are generic in nature.

However, if there is any specific map you'd like me to comment on then post it here.

Hi,

I took my old guide and revamped it. Here is the new one!

Enjoy!

Quake FAQs, HOWTOs, and Articles / Re: What mouse are you using?
« on: January 02, 2018, 03:07:29 PM »
I used to use ...

Zowie FK1
DPI 400
Sensitivity 2.2
m_directinput 2 (R1Q2 command -- basically raw mouse input)

Doesn't matter what Windows settings are as directinput bypasses windows sensitivity and acceleration.

Mousepad I'm using at the moment is a Steelseries QcK, I think. I used a Steelseries 9HD for years though, and really liked it.

Lots of factors affect your sensitivity in Q2, from FOV to resolution to FPS settings.

I installed Q2 out of curiosity to watch these two demos.

Conclusion: he isn't cheating. His perception isn't very good, and the little he does get can be easily identified using sound.

On a second note, recording in third person cam isn't very good for spotting cheaters. It's much more useful to have a first person perspective because you can see where they are looking more accurately and how their crosshair is behaving.

As for those insulting the original poster, that's totally unnecessary and uncalled for.

You'd be surprised. A lot of people cheat or have cheated, and cheats these days are quite sophisticated and harder to spot, unlike those old school rat bots that spin around like crazy.

Of course. "This ain't our first rodeo" as the saying goes. We had at one time a thriving 1v1 & TDM scene here. (Notice DaHanG is still moderator of that sub-forum.)

Problem is, these days the few individuals making lots of noise about "cheats" are low-tier walking-Dunning-Kruger-effect goofballs like Ratchet and friends who play only FFA and who seem to think any player with ears and aim MUST BE CHEATING!11!11one!!

If you do write a guide, please spend plenty of time on false-positives. For example: the low tick-rate of q2 demos provides replays of movement that snaps from sample to sample in a way that doesn't represent the original player. (And the slower you timescale a Q2 demo playback, the more it looks like an aimbot.) Etc. etc.

Last thing we need are a gaggle of low-information FFA players with no concept of Q2's high skill cap running around with a fresh "spot hackers" guide tucked under their arm, think they're seeing cheaters everywhere. ;)

Regards,

quadz

I get what you're saying, and it's true that giving those people more fodder to accuse would be a bad idea. I'm not even sure I could really write a guide on how to detect cheaters because a lot of it taps into the real arcane aspects of Quake 2. I'm able to spot cheaters because I took the time and effort to understand the psychological and physical aspects of Quake 2 to the point were I've become hypersensitive to anything out of the ordinary. Or to put it in plain terms: I know what's possible (and likely) and what isn't. I'm not sure if people detect such things unless they have that kind of experience.

If I do get round to writing a guide (and think it's worth it; Q2 is a dead game after all) then I'll be sure to stress that not every player that has aim or perception is a cheater, and that demos aren't particularly proof of cheaters. In fact, unless you're sitting in the same room watching a cheater play then it's almost impossible to prove that they cheat, so detecting cheaters is really more like educated/logical guessing.

I wouldn't even worry about it. Nobody's cheating... unless YOU are. Are you? History has taught many of us that those who obsess the most about cheating are often the ones doing it.

You'd be surprised. A lot of people cheat or have cheated, and cheats these days are quite sophisticated and harder to spot, unlike those old school rat bots that spin around like crazy.

I can probably write a short guide on how to spot cheaters.

I'll have a think about what the indicators are and then put something together. Essentially, spotting cheaters is an experience thing, but also takes a certain amount of logical thinking to analyse and deduct certain "possibilities".

I'd like to note that some of the settings in my config are out of date. It should have ...

Rate 25000
cl_maxfps 120
r_maxfps 1440

Thanks for the compliments and offer, Reefer. It's nice to hear from someone who actually appreciates what I tried to offer the Q2 scene.

Alas, quitting Q2 was always on the cards for me; the loss of my headphones just sped things up. The true reason ("personal reasons") I am quitting is because, as some people in the scene already know, I've been suffering from an anxiety disorder called Agoraphobia for the last three years, and Quake 2 has been somewhat detrimental to my recovery. I hate to say this, but during my latter years in Quake 2, it felt more like a sickness than a pleasure, and quitting was the only way I could purge this sickness. I took a lot of flak from a lot of people in the community over the years as well, so laying Q2 to rest feels like a burden has been lifted. It wasn't just my headphones, either. Earlier in the year my 120hz monitor broke, too; and I also had to switch to wireless internet last year. It's been one problem after another, and my headphones were really the final straw.

I turned 33 last week, and I really don't want to lose anymore of my life to Q2 or this Agoraphobia.
