Internet Explorer crashes
« on: November 25, 2008, 10:52:33 AM »
Been using IE 6 with all the updates on Windows XP with no problem for 5 years. In the last 3 months it has been crashing routinely on certain sites - the main one being Cnn.com. Tastyspleen is fine as well as many regular sites I visit. Sometimes I won't even get an error message - the application just closes. Once Windows almost gave me a clue saying it didn't like the .ocx file from Flash Player. I uninstalled flash player but no change. I went to Adobe to get their latest version (9) but they wanted money for it. I know Internet Explorer always comes with some version of it. In desperation I upgraded to IE7 (which works fine on my laptop) thinking this should do the trick. I go to CNN and get the message below. Most other sites work fine. White Pages phone directory will also crash IE.

They don't call it Internet Exploder for nothing.

Firefox crashes on me occasionally too.

try sending the error report. occasionally they'll link you to a fix for the problem if it's been documented previously and solved by MS.

unfortunately, that doesn't always occur.

A technically feasible solution would be trying to get IE6 working again with a fresh OS install and all the updates..
This can be quite a pain if you have lots of stuff to reinstall tho, so I'd call it an option of last resort.

Smells like you got some kind of internet VD. A lot of malicious shit is coded specifically for IE browsers. I've had my older PC do similar things. A browser hijacker of some kind,... possibly... don't quote me. I used to have SHITLOADS of internet VD on my other machine. I couldn't use Yahoo. I'd have Yahoo as my start page, I could search for something and it would send the first page of 20 results, but if I clicked any of the results, the browser would ALWAYS crash.

I guess what this type of "malware" does is prevent you from browsing certain content. Hehe, kinda like the e-mafia. They stand outside the mall with baseball bats guarding the doors and telling everyone, "We don' care where ya shop, buttchya can't shop here, prick!"

Try getting a few different antivirus and anti-spyware/malware progs. Run at least 2. Often times one particular AV will miss something that another one will catch.

I was kind of thinking some kind of malware and I had a very good spyware remover (BBS I think) but the application caught on that I never bought it, so it expired. But for safety's sake I think I may need to bite the bullet and take Whirly's advice and do a complete re-install. Its been 5 years and I probably have junk embedded in there. Gees, all that tedious copying files over to my portable HD. And then all the setup after.....

Or you can try to reinstall only Internet Explorer :

IE7 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b&DisplayLang=en

IE6 :
http://www.petri.co.il/download_the_full_ie_package.htm

IEFix 1.6 for IE6:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Adobe Flash Player :
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Adobe Shockwave Player :
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

Java :
http://java.com/getjava/

And use a good free antispyware and antivirus program :

Dr.Web CureIt (antivirus  no need to install it  just doubleclick it  :righteous: ) :
http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

Superantispyware (antispyware program  :dohdohdoh: ) :

Good rule to follow is to have your data on a separate partition than what your OS is on, that way when you go to format and re-install you don't even touch your data.

Also the further away you get from Microsoft's products the better off you will be, I'd suggest using either Firefox or Opera for a browser.  Hopefully one day you will ween yourself off the OS as well.

Anyway, back in my days of Windows, I used AVG Anti-virus, Spybot S+D, and AdAware SE, and I never had any problems what so ever.  Also used Firefox as my main browser.

I re-installed BPS Spyware Remover - an older version I've had in my software directory. It removed a few cookies from the usual area and now I can get into CNN without crashing. Problem appears to be fixed, whatever it was. I periodically delete all temp files, cookies and history but this had no effect previously. I dunno....but it worked.

Several instances of IE crashe when I close a browser window with a youtube video running. It doesn't happen if I pause the video first. Just can't get some of those videos off my monitor fast enough.  :D

I've also had firefox crash, but randomly.
