I apologize to the admins if they don't let him "haunted" hack "and they know about it". just going through the post's in here it's kinda tough to determine what's sarcasim and what is real. Now as far as only allowing win98 and linux, seriously if you are using win98 time to upgrade but even then the admins can put that ip on the exception list. As for linux user which I am too, again you can add them to the exceptiion list as well. Or if they are any kind of a linux user they can run a XP virtual box and play then. As for the admins having to go through log's and demo's left and right...why not let anticheat do the work for them. As far as suggesting the admins were letting him hack, i was going by haunted post in here. My fault for assuming, but they way you replied by to me is very childish. You  could have just as easy set me straight as far as haunted is conserned, instead you tell me to fuck off....

Without anticheat enabled you can't trust most of the people that play. People play w/ linux and 98 on the server I mentioned so it can be done with anticheat enabled.

I see 3 issues/problems here:

1. Haunted Hacking.....why in the fuck do you need to hack for?

2. RAZ0R Hacking......see above.

3. Server admin letting people hack on their servers, WORM over at the ACMECTF.COM

Who is he letting hack on acme?  I play there religiously and uh...they are far MORE strict on anticheat than any other servers out there heh.  You aren't allowed ONE bad file at all or you can't play.  Again, please tell me who cheats on WORM's server so I can laugh at you.

Sorry there Rick, while i was typing this on my laptop my cursor was on the post button and the touch pad was hit by my thumb and posted it before i was done typing. No one was cheating on acme, and if they were like YF and a few others...they were banned for a long time.

It's no problem man, you just threw me for a loop is all, lol.  ACME server is just by far the most well guarded server in q2 anymore regarding hacks or whatnot.  In no way am I putting down tastyspleen/quadz for not being as strict, but I mean, I agree with dell on this where it's time for you fucks to upgrade from windows 98..and if you are running linux, can you not set up a partition for windows xp?  I would like to see tasty be just as strict with anticheat as the ACME servers, but that does require a LOT of work and quadz/the other admins already put a shit ton of time into these servers and I don't think it would be fair to try to make them put that much work in.  Long live q2 and all the fucking cheating ass faggots (bundles of sticks)!

letting people with win98, a mac, or linux play is fine, except that they won't be using anticheat, thus negating the whole illusion of a hack free server.

IP exceptions allow them to use whatever client they want and connect to a forced anticheat server, which would effectively make it seem like they are more legit because they are on a forced ac server, even if they are using a wallhack or spiked models.

Anticheat is also not 100% foolproof. We've had players found on tastyspleen who attempted to use hacked r1q2 clients to get around it, and they were successful until the very active staff here worked with R1CH and found a way to determine that they were trying to fool the anticheat server.

placing all of your trust in a system like anticheat, that was never intended to circumvent the need for active admin participation is foolish, even moreso when you'd force it on everyone and make it harder for a large group of players to use the servers who didn't necessarily do anything wrong except use a non-microsoft OS or one made before the year 1999.

points taken, there is always going to be people trying to bunk the system and they'll get away with it from time to time.  My opinion better to force it and when there are updates using the r1q2updater.exe to keep most of the bottom feeders at bay. The percentage of people using mac/linux and 98 compared to XP and Vista is probably minimal at best. I'd be more worried about people using linux than anything. I do want to say I enjoy playing at tastyspleen and appreciate the admins in  what they do. Some of us just want to play a more legit game, rather than playing against people with downloaded skills.

In practice, this can be more challenging that it would seem.  A number of ISP's these days have hugely dynamic IP ranges.  (*.comcast.net, *.veloxzone.br, tampabay.res.rr.com, to name just a few.)

Their IPs range over a multitude of wide subnets.  I've developed a hostmask-based banning system to make the problem even manageable.

I'll admit I have not actually attempted to run Q2 under VMWare (or other emulator?) on my Linux or Mac systems.  I'd be interested to know how compatible that is. ... From a quick look at Google search results, it seems hardware 3D support under VMWare is a relatively recent development and still somewhat limited?

In any case.  In general, I don't really care if there are more people who use Windows.  I dislike penalizing people for their choice of Operating System.  Thus I'm not inclined to place a burden of inconvenience on non-Windows Q2 players.

This is not directed at you personally.  But what I've found is the players who complain most loudly about cheats, are often the least willing to record a demo.

Playing Q2 since December '97, but I've never gotten the impression that "most of the people" are cheating.

On the other hand, if it's as rampant as you suggest, I suppose it should be relatively straightforward to catch a few with demos.

heh, I meant spending as much time as the ACME admins do making sure everyone plays legit.  They are constantly on the prowl and only have about a grand total of 4 servers to look over so it makes their work a little easier than say, tastyspleen.  You have how many servers running?  You watching every single server, and paying attention to every player is basically near impossible verse the ACME servers heh.
