Which server is this happening on?

Which client are you using?

Which map(s) in particular does this occur for?

Are you using the demo version of Quake2?

Those are all stock maps and they come in the full game package but not the demo package that is downloadable. Mine Entrance (mintro) was a big clue when one of our clan members had similar trouble.

To test for demo version, run in Single Player mode and then type: gamemap mintro into the console. If it fails to run, you don't have the maps for the full game.

It was quite a while ago but IIRC, she downloaded the game update patch from idSoftware and someone emailed her the pak0, pak1 and pak3.pak files that contain the stock maps. I don't remember exactly which maps were missing from the demo version or why they were different from the server.

I get that error every now and then and it's very annoying, sometimes I can't play a certain map and it gives me the error but the next time that same map is played all is fine again... I sometimes got that error with the bunk1 map and I had to download it again (manually) from the server. Maybe it somehow got corrupted on my pc, idk.
But anyway you said you downloaded the maps from tastyspleen? Do you mean you downloaded the all-maps.zip? I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that file includes the singleplayer maps.

Of course you could just download the problem maps live from the server but then you need to remove them from pak0.pak first.
Once you've connected to one of the servers, type download/maps/boss1.bsp (for example).
But... I recently put the singleplayer maps on my site, look for the "Pak0-basic.zip" on my hosted site (link is in my forumprofile on the left). Hope that fixes it.

The single player maps should never be distributed by download from servers, every client should already have them (except the demo versions) since they came from idSoftware to begin with. I would never recommend altering the original PAKs from idSoftware as that will change what the client will have available in ALL modes and mods, including single player and you will introduce other potential errors when those games expect them to be there in those versions. That's probably what got the OP into this situation in the first place.

If for some reason I can't play certain stock maps on this particular server and downloading them (from the server) fixes the problem then I don't have a problem with it. I know what you mean but this is the only server that I know of that actually runs singleplayer maps so I'm not too worried about getting conflicting map versions on other servers.

Strange. I'd do a reconnect from the console when the client disconnects and see if that gets you in. Are you on a wireless LAN connection by any chance?

I don't understand why SP maps here would be any different from SP maps elsewhere but I suppose it's possible if someone renamed a custom or modified the originals somehow. I know we like to keep several of the stock maps in the rotation lists on our servers just so people aren't locked into download mode on every map in the rotations.

Peculiar.  None of our single player maps should be modified from the originals.

Although....

Several months ago, we merged a large map pack into our central repository...

I notice that it has individual .bsp files for the single player maps in there now.  They really aren't supposed to be there.  Their presence there means they would be downloaded via HTTP by r1q2 clients, if the player didn't have the full pak0.pak, which is not really kosher.

Besides copyright issues, if any of those files has a different checksum than the originals in pak0, then I can see how this error would happen.

I'll delete all the .bsp files for the single player maps from our repository...

I've had that error before and that was a long time ago, and I have never downloaded that map pack. I always had trouble with base1 and bunk1 and no matter how many times I reconnected and/or closed Q2 and got back, it still came up with the same error. That's why I renamed those maps in my pak0 and downloaded them manually from the server. I compared the files and the only difference were the dates... :?:

Hmm, dunno then. :dohdohdoh:

I've never had that problem here, and I'm on vanilla a few times a week...

Wonder what is causing it.  It's especially weird if the problem goes away for some people simply by trying to reconnect....
