would that logic include a database full of acceptable minimum player counts sorta like the OSP maplist?

That would be the idea (OSP has both a min and and a max, I believe, per map.)

However, I would probably not be inclined to try to specify limits for every map.  I'd probably just leave all the maps alone, except for a few really large maps like sewer64, hub, and outpost, where I'd try setting the min players to 18 or something...

...and just observe how that works out...

(But anyway, my scripts don't currently have this ability... so I'd need to get around to coding it...  :dohdohdoh:)

I think the main problem is that there are people who deem it necessary to mymap their favorite maps each and every time they're playing. Regardless of the number of players, they mymap 'their' maps, because they can. The soon as they enter the game they immediately take control over the map rotation and the rest of the players have to sit through their map choices. And by 'they' I mean those who like to pick map after map after map until all their favs have been played. Because of this it may look like those maps are popular, but if we would be using a mapvote system those maps wouldn't nearly be played as much.
Basicly that's the strenght of the mymap system but at the same time it's the problem. I have absolutely no problem with playing one or two "unusual" maps and might even have some fun but if I have to sit through five of them successively thanks to some nutcase then I lose my sense of humor and interest. :P

One more thing to add: and then there are players who mymap stuff just to keep from having to play the shit maps that they know that other player is going to mymap! I do this when I see a certain other player in-game (who shall remain nameless)--the guy has the WORST taste in maps, and he WILL take over the server with his shitty choices. Yeah, I know: it's a matter of taste, but some of this guy's choices empty out the server.

I wish there were a way to limit a player's mymap abilities, maybe two requests per day;  I can imagine that would be a nightmare to try to do.

We don't really have a "map pack" that I know of. I suspect that you're in there when Paddy/Big Bufford takes over the server; he's on there almost as much as I am!

Seriously though, I think I will take this up on the CRU private forum, just to let people know that people are getting annoyed.

I'm a wannabe map maker, so I'm getting a kick out of these posts.   (Sorry just got back from FarQ). 

Anyhow, SPACE is definitely the worst map ever!   :ohlord:    I can't stand low-gravity in general, and this crappy map just adds to the pain.  Other than that, I try to appreciate what the map maker was going for when they made the thing.  I've made a couple maps (as well as Ben, the random generator - see other thread), so I know it's not easy, and I'm impressed with some of the stuff I've seen out there. 

I still think one of the most beautiful maps ever made is Fusion - absolutely gorgeous look and feel - although it is a bit sprawling for less than about 8 players and has a couple unfortunate "dead" areas.  I love to see that people are still making maps for this age old game.  Quake 2 has got to be setting records by now.

I also agree about Quake 3 - the largest collection of crappy maps ever made!  I don't think there's one that is even half good in that game.

One thing I've considered that might possibly be worth trying, is to have a limit on how rapidly a given player can make use of mymap.  Like, if your map was just played, and you immediately try to mymap another one, maybe it gets inserted into playlist a few slots down, giving a few stock maps to play in the interim...

You know, this sounds like a very good idea. I really think that if this could be implemented there would even be no need to tune some maps to a 12 hour(!?) interval. My 2 cents - the only thing that we need to control is map duration.  That's about it.  Yes - just habib's opinion.   The small maps that get queued up alot are because people like them and they are over in about 3 minutes.  The onyl evil that I see is when a large map gets queued up and it takes 14 minutes to play.

I absolutely hate all those big maps, but I would hate to see someone waiting a long time just to play them.  Take for example "Train"  and "Space" these are generally quite tolerable if the duration is controled - I think they are at fraglimit 20 again  (yes I hate hate hate hate them violently).  They used to be set to 30 and it just dragged on.  Another option is timelimit on the excessively large maps.

The enemy of good play is excessive duration, not bad maps. 

Another thought is that if you have a small number of players (like early saturday mornings or something) it helps to have sequential mymap potential to choose the small ones.   

I personally would like to see a player stack in which you went to the bootom of the stack if you recently requested - like a request priority queue (and yes, the time spent coding for such a thing is not trivial).

Ok - nuff said.

Strange... I've played in every TS500 so far, and they've been some of the most fun I've ever had playing q2.

The last thing I want is for a good map to be over in 3 minutes.  On the other hand, I suppose it's a blessing that spammy little maps like fact3 are over so quickly.

Indeed - a good map over fast is not good, but if its a spammer they are up-and-down in an instant.   My reference was for something like sewer-of-strogannoff and with 3 guys, it just drags, and the stroganoff gets cold really fast . . .
