In league matches though, I see nothing wrong with one or both teams requesting it be closed to the public. It's their game, so whatever.
I think alot of players are either Shy or feel Intimidated when people watch them during a match that actually counts....ESPECIALLY if they feel there's a good chance of a loss.In my opinion ALL matches should be mandated open for viewing by spectators...there's no real reason for not doing so. Unless you fall into either the "shy" or "intimidated" category.Quake 2 can be just as much of a spectator sport as it is for actually playing. There's not a person here on the forums or that plays ANY kind of fps game that doesn't like to sit back and watch a good match from time to time. And I personally know of several people who actually enjoy Watching far more than playing. Mandating that all matches be open for spectating, in my opinion, will also maintain and/or generate a higher level of interest in the events that occur which is good for all of us. Thanks Quadz for debunking those 'old players tales'......WOOF!
how dare you your lucky to fucking even know i didnt brainwash you fuck im your only fucking hope

Maybe we need to have various connection types - Spectator, Announcer, Kibbitzer, Popcorn Sales Guy, Guy With The Programs & Tee-Shirts, Obnoxious Drunk Dude Rooting For The Other Team . . .

Alright, this is a really silly idea, but I was just thinking... What if you could have a "delayed spectator feed" or something? Have some sort of relay that connects as a spectator (or possibly through a special server backdoor), and that the other spectators can connect to. They'd be able to float around or chasecam as usual, but: 1. would be unable to bother the actual players with chat or [dis]connect messages, and 2. would be significantly less helpful as a cheating mechanism.
