uIu~UiU: nudge nudge, wink wink, tsk..tsk, say no more!...nyuk nyuk

Hmmmm.... I'll bet an automated solution could be coded to monitor the overuse of lengthy binds like that and perform a selective mute (using q2admin's chatban... yay, another q2admin dependency... :dohdohdoh:)

This wouldn't interfere with short binds like "lol" or smiley faces or short words that are common for everyone to say.  But the idea is that the code could watch for longer repetitive binds, and after some threshold, issue a chatban that would effectively disable that bind for awhile.

Hmm, might be fun to try...

:ugly_08:

would that mess with players who team alot and have weapon drop binds?  Should I be loaded with guns I might hit my binds alot to drop weps for teammates.

1. it would be configurable on a per-server basis, so it might not be enabled at all on the tourney servers

2. it only sees the messages wallfly can see... which don't include private team messages

Does R1Q2 have a decent client-sided /ignore feature?  Quetoo has a very simple one..  If you're annoyed by someone, just /ignore their name, clan tag, whatever and you won't see their chat messages.

Yes Gator your offensive smileys drive everyone nuts. ;)

Hmmmm.... I'll bet an automated solution could be coded to monitor the overuse of lengthy binds like that and perform a selective mute (using q2admin's chatban... yay, another q2admin dependency.)
This wouldn't interfere with short binds like "lol" or smiley faces or short words that are common for everyone to say.  But the idea is that the code could watch for longer repetitive binds, and after some threshold, issue a chatban that would effectively disable that bind for awhile.

... sounds good, but the length of the binds isn't really the problem, it is the frequency. For instance spl1nt3r is still pissing people off with the short "wtf's" each time after he has been fragged (who by the way posted [here] some time ago saying he would stop doing that). The same goes for the "fag's" and "fu's" from that frustrated UiuIiu or whatever his name is. To illustrate, check out the attached demo that I recorded last year starring some lame ass named (G)Joem, no long binds but just "gg's"... you be the judge.
OK I'm not sure if you deliberately disregarded the last part:P but as for the actual point of my previous post, what do you think of the suggestion that whenever an admin happens to see repetitive binds (long or short) he skips the warnings and just mutes them for a while if they have clearly abused the chat? I'd think adding a temp mute when the situation calls for it takes less time than warning people mutliple times first and I'm almost certain it will have more effect.

Right I'll stop now. :blahblah: :blahblah:

edit:

Yes, it has a good 'ignore' feature which I use quite often, but I know that plenty of others still use the standard Q2 client and they have to put up with the crap of a few individuals. Sure I could just use "ignore" so that I won't see the spammers but I know how annoying it can be for others. It's lame. Besides I'd like to see the spammers get what they deserve 'cause right now that's not happening enough imho.

I'd think adding a temp mute when the situation calls for it takes less time than warning people mutliple times first and I'm almost certain it will have more effect.

I didn't ignore the last part so much as wonder if there might be a more automated way to avoid busywork on the part of the admins.

The reason I differentiated between short and long binds is purely technical.  The chatban approach should be ok for longer binds because when "nudge nudge, wink wink, tsk..tsk, say no more!...nyuk nyuk" gets chatbanned, NOBODY will be able to say it for the rest of the map.  That's fine because who else would say that.  But if ":D" got banned so nobody could say it for the rest of the map, that seems less reasonable.

So what I've done is make long bind spam subject to chatbans, and short bind spam subject to individual temporary mutes.

I went ahead and coded the thing... I'll try it out on vanilla after the hard drive repair...

It may take some tweaking to dial it in so it mostly affects just the annoying spammers...  It's got several settings...

'bindspam_chatban/enable' = "yes"
'bindspam_chatban/min_text_length' = "10"
'bindspam_chatban/short_text_mute_enable' = "yes"
'bindspam_chatban/short_text_mute_secs' = "60"
'bindspam_chatban/trigger_at_num' = "5"
'bindspam_chatban/trigger_memory_seconds' = "600"
'bindspam_chatban/trigger_window_seconds' = "105"
'bindspam_chatban/trigger_window_seconds_short' = "60"

Should be interesting....  :dohdohdoh:

Haha, how funny... once wallfly was back online after the hard drive replacement, mister "nudge nudge, wink wink, tsk..tsk, say no more!...nyuk nyuk" was on vanilla, and became the first recipient of the new chatban logic.

:)

Currently, it's set so that if a "lengthy" bind is seen five times in three minutes, that particular bind will be chatbanned for 10 minutes.  (During that 10 period, they will only be able to say the bind once per map.)  Once the 10 minutes is over, they can start saying it again, subject to the "five times in three minutes" trigger.

Short binds use completely different timing, because I have to mute instead of just ban the bind in that case... that will probably need some tweaking... we'll see...

Thanks for looking into it. Looks like a good start there, mr Gyro Gearloose. Haha I bet you've even written scripts (or tried to) that answer the phone and that your house is filled with automated inventions like these :D

So what I've done is make long bind spam subject to chatbans, and short bind spam subject to individual temporary mutes.
I know you have good reasons to dislike q2admin but wouldn't it be possible to use something similiar to their chatflood protection? Which seems to only be counting the number of messages regardless of their length and content. (I'm sure it sounds a lot simpler than it is though..)

; chatfloodprotect "<number of messages> <in x seconds> <silence in seconds>"
; if <silence in seconds> is 0 then the person is kicked.
;
; e.g. chatfloodprotect "5 10 10"
;
; to disable change to: chatfloodprotect "disable"
;
chatfloodprotect "5 10 10"
;
; Chat flood protection message.
;
chatfloodprotectmsg "[Q2Admin] %s is making too much noise!"

Yeah, essentially i fall back on chatflood-like protection for short bind messages.  But for the lengthier binds, being able to target specific bind messages allows me to cast a wider net.  (Uh, or whatever a "wider net through time" should be called... ;))

If i tried to use regular chatflood protection with the wide parameters I can employ with the specific-bind-chatban technique, everybody would be getting muted just for saying "five things" within "three minutes".

hi
hey
anybody know the name of the map with the rocket launcher in a window looking out to some stairs
and the hyperblaster at the bottom of some pool of water
and there's this big fan in the floor with the quad above guarded by lasers

^^^^^^^^ this would trigger a mute by chatflood protection!  (that is, if i tried to use chatflood to cast a wide net like we're doing with the new specific-bind-chatban targeting.)

maybe it's just me, but some chat is not spam and other is.  I mean like in binds.  for  instance, Event will say
"I'm rock James bitch!" or "I'm gonna get you sucka".  I dont think they're trying to be rude or anything.

maybe there could be a list of players that get these extra-protections run against them, after they get a temp-mute or something.

just a thought

It seems to be working pretty well so far.  As I see it, it's not a question of a bind being rude, it's just that they can get spammy if overused.

And it's not like the bind becomes banned permanently.  It just gets quieted down for a period of time to where it can only be said once per map.  After the time period expires, it goes back to normal...

Currently this new code is only enabled on some of the FFA servers, and jumpmod.

I like it because it just shuts up the particular repetitive bind in question, but doesn't wholesale mute the player.

A couple of questions:
- The mute only gets triggered when people repeat the same thing five times within three minutes?
- What's going to happen if someone starts to alternate between different binds?
- If a certain bind gets chatbanned does that mean that for the rest of the map nobody will be able to say any of the words from that bind?
- When your message has just been banned does it then show anything as in an 'echo' text or will the message just not come through?
- This is probably a 'no' but does the script also take note of empty messages? You can also spam (your name) without an actual bind or message if you just go: t->enter, t->enter, t->enter, and so on.

 ;) Sorry but I'm just very interested in this.

- The mute only gets triggered when people repeat the same thing five times within three minutes?
- What's going to happen if someone starts to alternate between different binds?

Because there are two different systems at work here, mutes for short binds, and chatban for long binds... the terminology might get a little ambiguous...  I would have to reply to the first question that the mute AND/OR chatban does indeed trigger based on repetition of a specific bind.

With enough varied binds, it would be possible to circumvent this particular system.  If it's just two or three binds it would probably still trigger... 180 seconds is a fairly broad window.  (The system tracks everything said by every player, over a large window, so rotating through multiple binds won't in itself cause the system to lose track... it's just a question of a given bind repeating often enough within the window.)

If multiple varied binds should become used as a deliberate way to avoid the detection mechanism, i can think of a way to factor in the repetition of multiple binds, without banning general unique chat text... if need be.

- If a certain bind gets chatbanned does that mean that for the rest of the map nobody will be able to say any of the words from that bind?

No; rather, it means nobody would be able to say anything made up of the entirety of that bind.

E.g. if a bind like "omg omg I am the greatest n00b of all time. OF ALL TIME!" got chatbanned, then people would still be able to say "omg" and "i am" and "greatest", etc... but they couldn't say "omg omg I am the greatest n00b of all time. OF ALL TIME!? - no you're not" -- because that repeats the entirety of the banned phrase in the response.

- When your message has just been banned does it then show anything as in an 'echo' text or will the message just not come through?

The player sees a message locally like: [q2admin] message banned.
(something like that.)

- This is probably a 'no' but does the script also take note of empty messages? You can also spam (your name) without an actual bind or message if you just go: t->enter, t->enter, t->enter, and so on.

Yes, empty messages are caught by the "short bind" tracking mechanism.  (Mute, instead of chatban.  Smaller detection window, though...)

 :bravo:

looks like you spent a bit of time thinking on this and coding it appropriately to match your ethical concerns and your highly advanced sense of "fairness". gg console.

from what I've read it seems like a pretty streamlined system without much room for accidentally muting the player who isnt intentionally spamming.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
