Again, this is just tech applied to external marketing. All I see is a delivery method for Quake encapsulated by the things that the xbox-generation really gets hard over (matchmaking, achievements, friend lists, etc). From a market standpoint, this sounds like a solid idea to me. From a gaming standpoint - well, we'll have to see the tech itself. I don't see this making any splits in the community. Quake is Quake is Quake is Quake. Period. More methods of grabbing people in via more mediums is a good thing for everybody. People need to get back to some fps' with balls, and not this pansy-ass group of Halo's and COD4's (yes, I said it).

Try out Alien X and the Eight Legged Freaks advergame.

I've been very interested in the capabilities of 3d java games via the browser. Personally, if any game would really take off as an online browser based game it's Lucas Arts' Outlaws. It's a game ahead of it's time as far as deathmatch went. (It's where I got the idea for the stationary chaingun in my marine DM mod)

The SP is also very slick. It had a doom clone style engine but still was a very solid competative product. I always assumed that a multiplayer capible broswer based 3d shooter would use a doom clone style engine.

Okay, I felt bad after posting that, because from my experience with COD4, there wasn't anything blatantly *bad* about it. It's pretty. There aren't any features that feel like they were thrown in just because. I had to have a scapegoat for a current popular game though. I still don't quite see the badassery about it though, but that might just be me.
Which brings me to another potential concern - if this is going to be freely available to the extent they are saying, how does that effect the gore level? Is it going to be tuned down for a broader audience? :\

Rather, is the gore going to be totally nonexistant (at least by default) in order to make it more acceptable by today's standards? I don't remember seeing much blood besides some splatters in COD4, and halo's blood is... blue. Warsow, a game that's attempting to get into public consiousness and pro-tier organizations, is really low on the gore. It works for their style, but I still have to admit a growing trend towards bloodless fps'

Yeah COD4 only seems to have splatter and no mutated corpses, that disappointed me. It was no Soldier of Fortune.

I was trying to be funny, but you're right. I have nightmares about how FREAKING ANNOYING that "ERNT" sound is when you hit someone in quake3. Quake2's sound based on health remaining was a very cool and innovative idea. They removed the bloody face from doom and replaced it with easy to identify sounds based on remaining health. This was one of the many great features of quake2 that quake3 stripped out and threw to the fire.

However we're hardly talking about resident evil (or my favorite, Nightmare Creatures). Gore doesn't make the game so I'm sure that when it goes missing and unnoticed from 3dshooters in the near future, nobody will care to look back and point blame on any one thing.

Oh, and there's always postal 3. I can't wait!

I totally agree, but when it's an id software game that's taking that step back... I think that means something totally different and significant for a lot of us.
Yeah, hitsounds and stuff are cool for that pro atmosphere, but for a really pure dm experience, q2 really takes the cake. No lie.

But you can't fault CoD4 on it: none of the CoD games have had any type of gore. I wouldn't say that it's disappearing either... Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey & HL2 were all gore fests. For MP it could just be removed to lower the rating. Personally , I loved the way Q3A handled the gore: could be enabled or disabled. Great for people of all ages. Q2 is still more fun to play though.

But, rage is being aimed at a T rating. Why, I don't understand. Will it make the game less enjoyable, most likely no, but I still love splatting people in MP.

Remember that games like Goldeneye removed bodies to lower poly counts and improve performance. If quake4 deathmatch is less gorey than Quake4 single player, it's probably performance related. Turok 2 pretty much started the whole replacing all real models with dummy models in deathmatch thing. In turok 2 weapons were replaced with square tokens, and 1st person gun models were stripped down all to improve performance. Quake 4 did similar things, which is sad to see ID or Raven have to follow in Acclaim's footsteps.

but it's not performance related. the claim was that the performance would suffer, but in reality it didn't At least not any more then Quake 2/3 did. Maybe 1/2fps or so to see a few 3d gibbs & blood sprites.

I'm sure id has noticed that when they stopped with the gore in MP people stopped playing for fun. Nobody plays D3/Q4. all the changes have been for the "hardcore" people. The people who just played for fun don't play because they don't find it fun. Try asking them why they don't play vs the whiners who always complain they don't play.

I remember playing quake 4 multiplayer the first week I had the game. With stripped down gun models, limited gore, and the lowest resolution available, the video lag caused by firing the nailgun made a ping of 400ms desirable. If i lost another 2 fps I'd be in the negatives.

The prevailing joke amungst my freinds when Doom 3 was nearing release was:
"Wow, you need a supercomputer to run this thing. I bet the Weather center has some pretty hard core matches against the CIA."
