« on: January 15, 2008, 02:43:18 PM »
I see how popular the Ye religion thread has gotten and it makes think what a waste of time discussing something like religion lol (j/k)  I think we should be discussing the wars of our world!

Are you for the wars in the middle east?

Do you have something just picking at you you'd like to discuss about Pearl Harbor or Normandy or even Hiroshima?  these are things that interest me and I'd love to see a discussion about this!

btw im going to post this email i got and im sure ill hear some negative feed back but hopefully some good to.  :please:

                             British Salute to Canada.

A timely read when we lost our 72nd and 73rd boy this past weekend in
Afghanistan . British newspaper salutes Canada . It is funny how it took
someone in England to put it into words...

Sunday Telegraph Article from today's UK wires: Salute to a brave and modest
nation -
Kevin Myers, The Sunday Telegraph LONDON

Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, probably almost
no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are
deployed in the region. And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as
the rest of the world, as always, will forget its sacrifice, just as it
always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.

It seems that Canada's historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both
of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over,
to be well and truly ignored.

Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall,
waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance.

A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers,
and suffers serious injuries.  But when the hall is repaired and the dancing
resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped
glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.

That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with
the United States, and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global
conflicts. For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different
directions... it seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in
the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the
gratitude it deserved. Yet its purely voluntary contribution to the cause of
freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy.

Almost 10% of Canada's entire population of seven million people served in
the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The
great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps
the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle. Canada was
repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, its unique
contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular memory as somehow or
other the work of the "British".

The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with
a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic
against U-boat attacks. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the
Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on
D-Day alone. Canada finished the war with the third largest navy and the
fourth largest air force in the world.

The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the
previous time.

Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was
necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign in which the United
States had clearly not participated... a touching scrupulousness which, of
course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has no notion of a separate
Canadian identity.

So it is a general rule that actors and filmmakers arriving in Hollywood
keep their nationality... unless, that is, they are Canadian. Thus Mary
Pickford, Walter Huston, Donald Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, William Shatner,
Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Alex Trebek, Art Linkletter and Dan
Aykroyd have, in the popular perception, become American, and Christopher
Plummer, British.

It is as if, in the very act of becoming famous a Canadian ceases to be
Canadian, unless she is Margaret Atwood, who is as unshakably Canadian as a
moose, or Celine Dion, for whom Canada has proved quite unable to find any
takers.

Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of
its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of
them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves, and are unheard by anyone
else, that 1% of the world's population has provided 10% of the world's
peacekeeping forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been
the greatest peacekeepers on Earth...in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six
on non-UN peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to
Bosnia.

Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the popular on Canadian
imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia, in which out-of-control
paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their regiment was then
disbanded in disgrace, a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which,
naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.

So who today in the United States knows about the stoic and selfless
friendship its northern neighbour has given it in Afghanistan? Rather like
Cyrano de Bergerac, Canada repeatedly does honourable things for honourable
motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a
figure of fun. It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud,
yet such honour comes at a high cost. This past year more grieving Canadian
families knew that cost all too tragically well.

War is a very complicated subject. There's a whole gamut of reasons why you should or should not go to war against another country. Every situation is unique. I do believe, however that the price of freedom is blood. If you don't stand up to aggression you will be perceived as weak, and targetted. Hitler knew this and more recently Saddam Hussein. Both paid for it eventually but the price was blood.

War is needed, to think otherwise is to dream of a different world--I don't think I need to explain that, but if I do speak up.

Yes, war is indeed needed. Nobody's contesting that. But to think that was is the only solution is not dreaming but rather living in a nightmare.

Afghanistan

A related editorial in yesterday's paper:  [1]

UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL
Saving Afghanistan

Mission is far too important to fail

January 14, 2008

When U.S.-led NATO forces attacked the Taliban in Afghanistan six years ago, most of the world stood behind the effort. Clearly, al-Qaeda forces there and their enabler, the Taliban-controlled government, deserved punishment for the cowardly Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The intervening six years have not been easy going for the military and the rebuilding effort, and the reasons are fairly clear. First, the Taliban, with a safe haven in western Pakistan, still is able to regroup and attack NATO forces. Second, the government of Hamid Karzai is weak. Its control extends not much farther than the capital, Kabul. Third, corruption is widespread, much of it because of the opium trade. Afghanistan produces about 92 percent of the world's opium for illicit drugs.

Even with the focus of Americans mostly on Iraq since 2003, the efforts in Afghanistan are still generally supported in the United States. That is not necessarily so among our NATO allies, most of which have insisted that their troops stay out of the extremely dangerous southern provinces. In Canada, for instance, opposition parties are calling for their country's mission in Afghanistan to end by February 2009, at the latest. In Germany and Italy, troop deployments in the NATO mission have become a big political issue.

But the conflict there is far from ending. Rebuilding Afghanistan, which suffered through a brutal Soviet occupation from 1979 to 1989, will take many years and billions more dollars in aid. Currently, the United States provides 26,000 of the 54,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan.

For months now, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and other U.S. officials have been attempting to persuade the NATO allies to send more soldiers to combat the resurgent Taliban. Meeting resistance because of the NATO nations' domestic political concerns, the United States last week decided to send an additional 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan, where another spring offensive is believed likely and violence is generally on the rise. Overall, according to Pentagon data, attacks in the southern provinces are up 27 percent over the past year.

As the additional American forces are being deployed, the Bush administration is reassessing its strategy in Afghanistan. It is wise to do so if the mission there is to succeed in the long run. Even with allied resistance to sending in more of their forces, there is no danger that the NATO mission will collapse or become American only, at least not for the foreseeable future.

But Afghanistan has to become – and this already is happening – far more than a military mission. Force alone will not solve the problems of the nation of nearly 32 million.

Efforts to build up the military and police forces must be accelerated. The goal is to create a force of from 70,000 to 80,000. At the same time the interconnected problems of corruption and opium production have to be addressed more intensely. Eradication efforts favored by some in the Bush administration are a double-edged sword, solving part of the problem immediately but creating resistance in the population at the same time.

The mission in Afghanistan is too important to fail. A formula for permanent peace in an economically self-sustaining nation must be found.

that formula should include shoving democracy down the throats of every strategically unimportant nation, using force..

that'll help!

OK SO i'M GOING TO ADMIT i STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE WAR WENT FROM BEING IN AFGHANISTAN TO IRAQ  :?:  WAS IT THE WHOLE 'WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION' CLAIM THAT BROUGHT USA INTO IRAQ?

i'M KIND OF LOST WHEN IT COMES TO THIS WAR ON IRAQ...  i'VE HEARD RUMORS ABOUT HOW BUSH IS ONLY IN IRAQ FINISHING WHAT HIS FATHER STARTED AND HOW DOMINATION/THE COUNTRY'S OIL IS ALL HE WANTS.

CAN SOME ONE CLEAREFY THIS FOR ME?  AND CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO SPELL CLEARIFY FOR FUCKS SAKES?   :lolsign:

lol n/m i read up on it myself.. but still can't spell that word clearify ;P

i read this page http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/10/20021007-8.html

i can see clearly now..

BTW regarding ww1 and ww2 my dad tells me that america stayed out of the world wars for a LONG time refusing to choose sides. he said that america waited until there was one side winning until they decided to join in. like america wanted to only join in once it was clear they were joining the winning side  :sorry:  :lolsign:  i have no idea how credible this is that he claims, or if its just the crazy ramblings of an old man who dislikes americans lol!!  but i do plan on doing research on dates and such of both wars and having this debate with him.  ( i love to prove the old man wrong ;) )

I posted this in another terrorist attack

Poison gas and nerve agents are considered to be weapons of mass destruction

Iraqi troops, on orders from Saddam to stop a Kurdish uprising, attacked the Kurdish
town of Halabjah with a mix of poison gas and nerve agents killing 5,000 people,
mostly women and children

Saddam Hussein also used poison gas and nerve agents in the war against Iran
